In this walkthrough, we’ll guide you through the game’s tutorial as you’re shown the basic controls and kick off the Main Story. This guide therefore can also serve as a nice reminder in case you’ve forgotten any of the key mechanics revealed in Hogwarts Legacy’s opening sequence.
The game opens with a fairly lengthy cutscene that introduces the plot’s central elements: The Goblin Rebellion and Ancient Magic. When the cutscene ends, you’ll be injured on the ground — press to heal, and then listen to a bit more conversation. When prompted, use the right stick to look around, and then your character will finally stand up.
Follow Professor Fig
Follow Professor Fig by using the left stick to move, and make your way out of the cave and down the path. You’ll quickly lose control of your character again as you and Professor Fig discuss where you are, and why. When Fig suggests finding a path, follow him along the edge of the cliff. You’ll reach a small ledge — hold / to climb up it, then keep following Fig. Climb up the next ledge and continue following Fig — you’ll do more climbing and hopping down as he explains what he knows about Ancient Magic.
You’ll soon find your path blocked. Do as Fig instructs and press while your camera is pointed at the magic ice to do a Basic Cast at it. A few Basic Casts will destroy the ice, and you’ll be able to proceed down the path.
Before you do, however, carefully read the note on targeting, and consider if you’d prefer the easier (but less accurate) method of disabling Camera-Relative Targeting in the settings. (You can always change it later, but it’s good to remember the option is there). You can test out the different targeting options on the pots strewn around the path as you follow Fig down the slope and around the corner. When he says “Up there”, you’ll need to again hold / to climb up the ledge (1). After you do, turn to the left to grab the chest ( /) hiding around the corner (2).
Turn back and keep following Professor Fig, and another cutscene will start in which Fig will cast Reparo to restore the bridge. When the cutscene ends, you’ve got to — you guessed it — keep following Fig, across the bridge and up the stairs. At the top of the stairs is a stone arch — around the corner to the right is a chest you can grab before continuing to follow Fig.
Explore the Ruins
He’ll suggest you look around, at which point you’ll need to make your way east and then south, around the corner (1). Continue on the narrow path and you’ll soon find a blue crystal on a wall, marked by the objective icon (2). Get close to it, and you’ll call out to Professor Fig as it becomes reflective. Stand right in front of the wall and wait. Once Fig inspects the wall a bit, you’ll get a prompt to Investigate it. Do so by pressing /, and you’ll bring yourself and Fig through the wall.
1 (The route is also indicated on the minimap)2
Wake the Goblin & Follow Professor Fig (2)
Turn left and you’ll see a chest against the wall. Then, walk over to the desk indicated by the objective icon, where a goblin is sleeping. Get close enough to the desk that you see the Investigate prompt, and once again hit /. Another cutscene will play. It’s a long one — you can press /to skip it if you’re just here for the action, but some key plot details are revealed during it. Make your way off the mine car and follow Fig and the Goblin toward the vault door, but before going in make sure to grab the chest to the right with /.
Yet another cutscene will play, and then you’ll be able to enter the vault. Enter, then enjoy another cutscene.
Proceed Into the Vault
When it ends, you’ll get to learn your first real spell, via the spell learning minigame. Use the left stick to guide the cursor through the letter R, and hit / when it reaches the circles with the button in them to speed up. If you successfully make it through the little course fast enough, you’ll learn Revelio! As an Essential Spell, Revelio will always be available to you — just press to cast it. Walk forward, closer to the door ahead, and cast Revelio again. You’ll see another Ancient Magic symbol on the door in front of you — approach it and, once prompted, Investigate with /, and you’ll find yourself in another new place.
Stay Close to Professor Fig & Determine How to Proceed
Stick close to Professor Fig as he leads the way through the chamber. He’ll lead you to another bit of Ancient Magic — stand on it and then press / when prompted. You’ll alter the floor, and near Fig you’ll see a statue in the ice (1). Walk over to it and cast Revelio with , and you’ll reveal a statue on your side of the ice. After a brief conversation, you’ll be taught a new spell. Once again, steer your cursor through the path and hit / when it reaches the circles with the button in them to speed up.
Once successful, you’ll have learned Lumos! It will be assigned to / by default — hold and then press / to cast Lumos. Then, walk in front of the statue (2) to line the reflection up with the statue and start a cutscene.
1 – Cast Revelio near the statue’s reflection2 – Make the reflection face the same direction as the statue itself by standing in front of it with Lumos activated
Protego incoming enemy attacks
During the cutscene, you’ll learn to use Protego, the Shield Charm — press / while your character has the orange halo to block an incoming attack. Once the cutscene ends, you’ll need to successfully use Protego three times, so focus on watching for the orange halo and timing your Protego casts. Of course, you’ll have to use your Basic Cast () as well to actually finish off the statues.
Say it with me: when you see the halo, it’s time to Protego
Find Professor Fig
After you finish off the statues, wait near Professor Fig while the room goes dark. Cast Lumos with + /, and then follow the wisps of magic (1). On the way, make sure to cast Revelio in order to locate a chest (2). They’ll lead you to another spot of Ancient Magic (3) — before you do anything with it, cast Revelio again and find yet another chest nearby. Then, like before, walk up to the magic on the floor and press / when prompted. Doing so will reveal another Statue puzzle. Cast Revelio near the reflections until all three statues are revealed, and this time, you’ll need to stand at a point in front of all three statues (4) to activate them (make sure you have Lumos activated!). Again, use Protego and Basic Casts to defeat the statues. It’ll be a bit tougher since you’re alone, but there aren’t very many this time.

Hold Protego to Stupefy Counter Enemies
After you defeat the first wave, you’ll get a pop-up about Stupefy counter-attacks. They’re simple — just hold / when casting Protego, and you’ll automatically stun the attacking enemy. Use this trick on the next wave of enemies, remembering to watch for the halo to time your Protego. You’ll have to Stupefy three enemies to proceed, so focus on doing that before finishing off the Guardians with Basic Casts.
Find Professor Fig
Once the last guardian falls, follow the wisps of magic again, noting you can hold in on the left stick to sprint. The wisps will lead you to a large sculpture with ancient magic on the floor nearby. You know what to do: stand on the indicated spot (1) and press / when prompted. The statue will transform into a gateway. Go through the gateway and cast Revelio to find the two chests on either side of the room, then approach the Pensieve (2) — it’s the stone basin in the middle of the next room — then press / when prompted

Doing so will begin another exciting cutscene. When it ends, you’ll finally be at Hogwarts!

You missed 4 chests throughout this sequence just thought I’d let you & everyone know
Thank you for the reminder re: updating this guide. Turns out there are actually 8 chests in total!
