Help Omeluum Investigate the Parasite – Baldur’s Gate 3

Joining the long list of people interested in the parasite in your head, you’ll meet the mind flayer Omeluum in the Underdark. But will he help you or hurt you, and is there anything you can do to improve the odds? Read our guide to find out.

Inside the Myconid Colony in the Underdark, you’ll meet the hobgoblin Blurg, who is a member of the Society of Brilliance. If you tell him about your parasite, then he’ll introduce you to another member of the Society — the mind flayer Omeluum. If you allow it, then Omeluum will examine you, and he’ll determine that your parasite is currently in stasis, which is why you haven’t turned yet. This examination will trigger the quest.

Omeluum won’t be able to extract the parasite, but he’ll speculate that that a potion containing Timmask Spores and Tongue of Madness might be able to disrupt the parasite’s stasis just enough for him to examine it more closely. Omeluum will then ask you to find those ingredients for him, and Blurg will suggest looking in the Arcane Tower.

The Arcane Tower is located in the southwestern part of the Underdark. You’ll find the Timmask Spores and Tongue of Madness on Level 3.

When you hand over the ingredients to Omeluum, he’ll brew the potion and give it to you. If you ask him what the potion will do to you and beat a passive DC-10 Insight check, then you’ll sense that Omeluum is uneasy — but don’t worry; he’s not trying to use you (like High Priestess Glut in the Shattered Sanctum) or kill you (like Nettie in the Emerald Grove). He’s just not sure what exactly will happen.

When you drink the potion, your body and the parasite will fight against it. There are three stages to this:

  • In the first stage, if you fail an unspecified passive Constitution check, then you’ll become Poisoned for 10 turns.
  • In the second stage, the parasite will fight the potion. If you fail a DC-10 Intelligence or Wisdom check, then you’ll gain the Tongue of Madness condition for 5 turns, and you’ll lose 5 hit points.
  • In the third stage, the parasite will continue fighting. If you fail a DC-15 Intelligence or Wisdom check, then you’ll gain the Dazed condition for 5 turns, and you’ll lose 13 hit points.

Whether you pass or fail (or don’t even try) the checks won’t change anything about the quest. At the end of the sequence, the parasite will grow stronger, and you’ll gain the Survival Instinct class action. Omeluum won’t learn anything new about the parasite, but he’ll become a shopkeeper like Blurg.

Omeluum will feel bad about how things turned out, and he’ll try to tempt you with a “priceless” Ring of Mind-Shielding. If you offer to tell Omeluum about the Nautiloid and then pass a DC-10 Intelligence or Performance check, or if you pass a DC-15 Persuasion check or a DC-20 Intimidation check, then he’ll give you the ring for free. Otherwise, you’ll have to buy it in his shop.
