A deep gnome slave has escaped from her duergar masters — but not before being poisoned. Can you save her? In this guide, we’ll show you how.
Map
Points of Interest 1 – Thulla 2 – Gekh Coal
Background
In the Myconid Colony in the Underdark, you’ll meet a deep gnome named Thulla (#1). She’ll be on the ground writhing in pain near Sovereign Spaw. When you talk to Thulla, or if you beat a passive DC-7 Nature check, you’ll realize that she’s been poisoned. This will trigger the quest.
Walkthrough
Thulla will tell you that she was poisoned by the duergar in the area when she escaped from them. There are several ways to cure — or “cure” — her:
You can give her a potion like Antidote or Elixir of Poison Resistance. You can buy, loot, or steal the Duergar Antidote from Gekh Coal, the duergar who poisoned her (#2). Potions of Vitality also work, but you won’t be able to give her one through dialogue — you’ll have to throw it at her.
You can cast a spell like Lesser Restoration (which is available to Shadowheart, or castable via the Amulet of Silvanus, which you can obtain in the Emerald Grove).
You can use the Lay on Hands: Cure class ability for Paladins.
You can pass a DC-15 Persuasion check to convince Thulla to let you end her misery, and then deliver the killing blow during dialogue. Or you can just force attack her. Either way, the myconids won’t be happy about you killing Thulla, and you’ll have to beat a DC-15 Deception, Insight or Persuasion check to placate them.
You can just wait and let nature take its course. After three Long Rests, Thulla will die from the poison.
If Thulla survives your ministrations, then she’ll ask you to save the rest of her clan, which is being forced to dig up something at Grymforge. This will trigger the quest Save the Grymforge Gnomes. If you agree to help the gnomes, then Thulla will give you the Boots of Speed she stole from the duergar when she escaped.
Note: There is a companion quest to this called Find the Missing Boots, where Gekh Coal (#2) will ask you to retrieve The Boots of Speed. The best way to get the boots from Thulla is to help her. Failing that, if you beat a DC-10 Investigation check, or if you know about the boots from Coal, then you can simply take them from Thulla while she’s poisoned. If you kill Thulla or let her die, then Sovereign Spaw will turn her into a husk, and you’ll only be able to get the boots from it by killing it — which will turn all of the myconids hostile.
