A deep gnome slave stole Sergeant Thrinn’s boots before escaping from Grymforge. Can you bring them back so Thrinn can stop walking around barefoot? In this guide we’ll show you how.
Background
When you venture into the Decrepit Village in the Underdark, you’ll meet a group of duergar led by Gekh Coal. They won’t be happy to see you, but there are a few ways to keep them from turning hostile:
You can pass a DC-10 Insight check to read Gekh’s thoughts and learn that he’s working for the Absolute.
If you spotted the duergar with a passive DC-20 Perception check before they revealed themselves to you, then you can let them know this.
If you are a Fighter, have been Branded (by High Priestess Gut in the Shattered Sanctum), or if you’re playing a Duergar yourself, then they’ll accept you right away.
Drow will have easier checks than other races (outside Duergar). If you’re playing a Deep Gnome then the duergar will assume you’re another runaway slave, and they’ll attack you. They’ll also attack you if you have Sovereign Glut with you for the quest Avenge Glut’s Circle.
If the duergar don’t attack you, then Gekh Coal will tell you that they’re in the area looking for an escaped deep gnome slave who stole Sergeant Thrinn’s boots when she escaped from Grymforge. Learning about the boots or finding the boots on the slave will trigger the quest. You’re not required to talk to the duergar or offer to help them, and you can kill them at any time and still complete the quest (since you’ll be delivering the boots to Thrinn, not them).
Walkthrough
The runaway slave is named Thulla. You’ll find her in the Myconid Colony to the north, lying on the ground near Sovereign Spaw, writhing in pain. When you talk to Thulla, you’ll learn that she was poisoned during her escape. This will trigger the quest Cure the Poisoned Gnome. There are three basic ways to get the boots from her:
When you talk to Thulla, you’ll get a DC-10 Investigation check to see if she’s carrying anything worthwhile. If you pass, then you’ll spot the boots, which will allow you to take them from her.
You can kill Thulla (as a mercy or not) and then pass a DC-15 check on Deception, Insight or Persuasion to keep the myconids from getting mad at you. You’ll find the boots on Thulla’s corpse, but you’ll have to move quickly to steal them before Sovereign Spaw turns her into a husk.
When you acquire the boots, you’ll discover that they’re Boots of Speed. To deliver them to Sergeant Thrinn, you’ll have to travel to Grymforge. If Gekh Coal is still alive, and if you show him the boots, then he’ll allow you to use his boat to sail there. If Coal is dead, then you can simply commandeer his boat.
When you sail to Grymforge, you’ll be stopped by Corsair Greymon, who will wonder what you’re doing on Gekh Coal’s boat. If you tell him about the boots, or if you convince him that you belong on there (by passing a DC-15 Deception check or a DC-10 Intimidation check), then he’ll hop aboard and make the trip with you. Otherwise, you’ll have to fight him and his men.
At Grymforge, you’ll need to head south to a spot where a tunnel has collapsed. You’ll find Sergeant Thrinn there directing other deep gnome slaves to dig their way through. When you hand Thrinn her boots, she’ll give you a reward — either Armour of Uninhibited Kushigo or a Bracing Band. If you’d rather have the boots, don’t worry. You can get them back later if you kill Thrinn at the end of the quest Free True Soul Nere.
