How to Finish the Masterwork Weapon – Baldur’s Gate 3

When exploring the Blighted Village in Baldur’s Gate 3, you may have ran across a journal mentioning a Masterwork Weapon. This guide will tell you how to complete the work and get your hands on a nice piece of early-game gear.

First, you’ll need to locate the Blighted Village, if you haven’t already. It can be reached by going west from the Emerald Grove. Once in the Blighted Village, find the blacksmith’s house (1). There in a corner behind a barrel is Highcliff’s Journal (2), a book where the blacksmith’s apprentice boasts about knowing how to craft a Masterwork Weapon.

After you’ve read the journal, you’ll need to find the blueprints for the weapon. Don’t get misled by the faded blueprints (1) hanging on a crumbled wall outside – these are just a red herring, so don’t even bother picking them up.

Instead, you should head straight for the basement (2) where the forge is located. The blueprints for the Masterwork Weapon are inside a Wooden Chest (3) you can see right as you enter the basement. Passing a DC-10 Perception check reveals that the chest is trapped. Disarm the trap (4) and open the chest – Highcliff’s Blueprints are inside (5).

Don’t forget to read the blueprints (6). This way you’ll advance the quest and learn that you need a piece of sussur bark and an unmodified greatsword, sickle, or dagger. The weapons are all over the place and chances are you’ve already found a bunch and sold them to a vendor. You should be able to buy them back there. Alternatively, we were able to find a dagger and a sickle among the crates in the basement, but upon reloading the stuff we found changed, so what you find down there is randomized to a degree.

Whether you find the base item right away or leave it for later, you should head into the Underdark next. Once there, make your way through the Myconid Colony until you find yourself by a large blue tree. You’ll know you’re in the right spot when you see your first Sussur Bloom – a flower emitting an anti-magic aura (1). Leave these be, as they’re not what you need for the quest.

Instead, head down into the basin past a Hooked Horror until you unlock the Underdark – Sussur Tree Waypoint. Walk up the roots (2) you see from there, and after dealing with some more Hooked Horrors along the way (stay away from ledges, as they like to push you into chasms) you’ll arrive to a spot where you can grab a piece of Sussur Tree Bark (3).

Now, you have everything you need to craft yourself a sussur weapon.

Head back to the forge in the Blighted Village. Once there, make sure you have the sussur bark and a basic weapon (greatsword, sickle, or dagger).

  • Click on the Melting Furnace to light it up (1).
  • Click on the Blacksmith’s Bellows to get the fire going (2).
  • When you click on the furnace again, a new menu will pop up. Put the sussur bark into the empty slot and click Combine (3).
  • The fire will turn blue (4). Click the furnace one more time and put the basic weapon into the empty slot of the now familiar menu and click Combine (5).

Congratulations. You now have a Sussur weapon.

Infusing a basic weapon with the magical properties of the sussur tree grants it the following properties:

  • Weapon Enchantment +1
  • Silences target on hit

The enchantment is nice to have in the early game where magical items are rare, while the silence property makes sussur weapons great when facing enemy spellcasters.
