Avenge Glut’s Circle – Baldur’s Gate 3

Sovereign Glut wants to take revenge against everyone responsible for his circle being destroyed in the Underdark. And he means everyone! In this guide we’ll show you how to help him, or not.

Points of Interest
1 – Sovereign Spaw
2 – Sovereign Glut
3 – Gekh Coal / Duergar
4 – Mushroom Vault

When you speak to Sovereign Spaw in the Myconid Colony in the Underdark (#1), he’ll show you visions of duergar attacking his circle and killing his people, all because he gave refuge to some of the duergar’s deep gnome slaves. He’ll then ask you to “cleanse the rot,” which is camped out in the decrepit village to the southwest (#3). If you agree to this, then you’ll trigger the quest Defeat the Duergar Intruders.

Afterwards, when you pass by Sovereign Glut in the Myconid Colony (#2), he’ll show you visions of his circle, which was destroyed completely by the duergar, and he’ll want to assist you with their destruction. No matter how you respond, you’ll trigger this quest.

Allowing Glut to follow you into battle is optional. If you don’t take him with you, then you’ll be able to talk to the duergar first, and you’ll learn that they’re searching for special boots that one of the deep gnome slaves stole before escaping. This will trigger the quest Find the Missing Boots. If Glut comes with you, then the duergar will attack you right away.

After the battle, and after leading Glut to the duergar leader’s corpse (if necessary), he’ll inform you that he has further avenging in mind. He’ll tell you that Sovereign Spaw ignored his pleas for help when the duergar attacked his circle, and he’ll ask you to kill Spaw in revenge. If you agree to this, then Glut will continue to follow you. Otherwise, he’ll attack you.

When you return to Sovereign Spaw (#1), he’ll name you Peace-Bringer for defeating the duergar, and he’ll open the way into the mushroom vault (#4) so you can receive your reward for completing his quest. But then Glut will start ranting, and you’ll have to make a choice: you can turn on Glut (if you didn’t kill him already), or you can turn on Spaw.

Note: If you have a Charlatan (like Astarion) in your party, then reaching this point in the quest will earn you the “Warmonger” inspiration.

If you turn on Glut, then he’ll attack whatever myconids happen to be nearest to him, or you. But he’ll be greatly outnumbered, and the battle should conclude quickly. Afterwards, Sovereign Spaw will name you Kin Spirit, and while he’ll talk about giving you an extra reward, he won’t. The only reward you’ll receive for the quest is what you’ll find on Glut’s body: a Scroll of Blur, a Scroll of Hold Person, and more. If you kill Glut in the Myconid Colony, then you’ll have to steal these items from his corpse.

If you turn on Spaw, then all of the myconids in the colony will turn hostile, and they’ll converge on your position (but the non-myconids, like Derryth and Omeluum, will remain neutral). This battle will only last while Spaw is alive, so target him first. If one of your characters has great Strength, then you can try pushing Spaw off the edge of the mushroom platform he’s on. If you’re successful, then he’ll fall to his death, and you’ll end the battle right away. Afterwards, Glut will name you King-Bringer, and he’ll give you the gloves Winter’s Clutches. You’ll also find the same things on Spaw’s body as you would have found on Glut’s — spell scrolls and more — plus The Sovereign’s Key, which opens the mushroom vault (#4). Glut will then take charge of the circle, and he’ll replace Spaw in any quests where the sovereign myconid is involved (like Deliver Nere’s Head).

This decision is mostly for role-playing. Spaw is “good” while Glut is “evil.” Not much will change between having Spaw or Glut leading the myconid circle. You’ll receive a different reward at the end of the quest Deliver Nere’s Head — Spaw will give you the Envoy’s Amulet (which grants a bonus to Persuasion), while Glut will give you the Champion’s Chain (which grants a bonus to Intimidation) — but that’s about it. So just choose whichever sovereign you like better.

“You know it for what it is: a chant of war. Glut’s reign would not be one of peace — but terror.” – Narrator
