StarCraft Shooter Announced, Coming 2030

Prior to this year’s BlizzCon there were rumors about a new StarCraft game in development. And while some expected that to be a brand-new RTS, most people in the know hinted at a StarCraft shooter. To those of us following Blizzard for a while, that immediately screamed some revival of the old StarCraft: Ghost project.

So, it came as a bit of a surprise when Blizzard’s General Manager and Vice President Dan Hay revealed an entirely different StarCraft game. While it doesn’t have a subtitle at this point, we know that it’s going to be a AAA open-world shooter, and that it’s currently in development at Blizzard Entertainment.

The nature of StarCraft lends itself well to a massive faction-driven multiplayer shooter in the vein of PlanetSide, or even a cooperative shooter similar to Helldivers 2. However the information we have right now points to a story-driven sci-fi shooter, which implies a more single-player focus for this project.

The game is said to be set in the Koprulu Sector 70 years after the events of StarCraft 2’s Legacy of the Void expansion. And based on the reveal trailer, the Dominion will play a major role in it. This intriguing project is currently scheduled for a 2030 release. Who knows what shape it will take by then. Either way, it’s exciting to see the next step for the StarCraft universe.
