The current sovereign of the Myconid Colony in the Underdark isn’t happy at all with a True Soul drow named Nere, and he wants you to bring back his head. In this guide we’ll show you how to do it, and also reveal with sovereign gives the best reward.
Background
After completing the quest Defeat the Duergar Intruders for Sovereign Spaw in the Myconid Colony in the Underdark, he (or Sovereign Glut, depending on how things turned out) will ask you for a second favor. He’ll show you visions of a drow elf named Nere, and he’ll claim that Nere was the “source” of the duergar who attacked his people. Spaw (or Glut) will then ask you to kill Nere and bring back his head. Regardless of how you respond, you’ll trigger the quest.
Walkthrough
You’ll find Nere at Grymforge. He’ll be trapped in a collapsed tunnel, and his duergar allies and deep gnome slaves won’t be having any luck getting him out. Dealing with this situation is covered in the quest guide for Free True Soul Nere.
There are two basic ways to kill Nere:
If you take too long to free Nere from the tunnel, then he’ll die there, but the deep gnome slaves will eventually dig their way to him, giving you a way to access his corpse.
You can liberate Nere by blowing up the rubble blocking the tunnel. At that point, Nere will come storming out, mad at everybody, and you can kill him then. If you join forces with the mutinous faction of duergar, then they’ll even help you out in the battle.
When you interact with Nere’s corpse, you’ll get a DC-10 Strength check to remove his head. If you pass the check, then you’ll decapitate Nere pretty easily. Otherwise, you’ll have to work harder and do some sawing to remove the head. But either way, you’ll receive Nere’s Head. You’ll also find some useful loot on Nere’s corpse, including Disintegrating Night Walkers, a Mind Flayer Parasite Specimen, and the Sword of Screams.
When you return to the Myconid Colony in the Underdark, the Sovereign who gave you the quest will sing your praises — literally — and the myconids will dance happily. If Spaw is the Sovereign, then he’ll name you “Life-Chanter,” and he’ll give you an Envoy’s Amulet. If Glut is Sovereign, then he’ll give you a Champion’s Chain.
