White Mask Varre

Game: Elden Ring

A mysterious masked figure who offers an alternative to following the Two Fingers.

White Mask Varre is the first “friendly” character that players will encounter in Elden Ring. Though he is slightly rude, reminding the player that they are a lowly, maidenless Tarnished every chance he gets, he will offer very useful guidance to beginners, explaining what their first goal should be in the vast Lands Between. Observant players may realize that something’s not quite right with Varré, however.

Requirements: None.

The first encounter that players will have with Varre will be very early on in the game — immediately after leaving the Stranded Graveyard in fact, right next to the second Site of Grace that players encounter, aptly named The First Step, in Limgrave.

Varre will offer guidance to players, explaining that as Tarnished, they should follow the Guidance of Grace, the golden arrows and golden light, pointing their way forward. Their first goal should be to head to Stormveil Castle, home of the decrepit demigod Godrick the Grafted.

You can return to Varre after visiting the Roundtable Hold and defeating Margit, the Fell Omen at the entrance to Stormveil Castle. He will now explain that in order to gain full membership to the Roundtable Hold, you need to head further into Stormveil Castle and defeat its lord, Godrick the Grafted, in order to claim his Great Rune.

He will remain at this location until you defeat Godrick.

Requirements: Defeat Godrick the Grafted in Stormveil Castle & visit Roundtable Hold & speak with the Two Fingers.

Varre will move to western Liurnia of the Lakes after you’ve defeated Godrick. The easiest way to reach him will be by teleporting to the Fallen Ruins of the Lake Site of Grace and heading due west, until you reach the Rose Church — he’ll be standing right outside. Beware: going into the church causes a Sanguine Noble enemy to appear and attack you.

He’ll initially have some fluff dialogue, until you have spoken to the Two Fingers. He will ask you what your impression of them was. If you respond “They were magnificent”, he will end the conversation right there, but speaking with him again will cause him to keep asking you the same question, until you respond that “They didn’t seem right”.

It is at this point that Varre will reveal his true colours and explain that he has also been doubting the Two Fingers. If you speak with him again, he gives you 5 Festering Bloody Fingers and instructs you to try using them. These items are used to invade another player’s world and engage in PvP combat with them, with the goal of killing the Host in that world.

In order to advance Varre’s quest, you have two choices:

  • Use the Festering Bloody Finger to invade other players 3 times. It doesn’t matter if you win or lose, and you can even use the Finger Severer to return to your own world if you don’t want to fight at all — you just need to invade 3 times. Doing so will complete Varre’s first quest.
  • Go to the Writheblood Ruins in Altus Plateau (see part 3) and invade Magnus the Beastclaw. Defeating him will complete Varre’s first quest — if you can’t kill him, you can just try three times, which will also complete the quest.

Requirements: Complete Varre’s first quest by invading other players using a Festering Bloody Finger 3 times.

Return to Varre outside the Rose Church after completing his first quest and he’ll be very pleased to see you. He will reveal that he is serving Luminary Mohg, the Lord of Blood, another major character inside the game. He will ask if you would like to be anointed as a knight of Mohg — choose “Anoint me” in order to accept his next quest. Note that similar to other quests, if you refuse, he’ll just keep asking.

He will now give you the Lord of Blood’s Favor, a piece of cloth that he instructs you to soak in the blood of a maiden. He explains that normally, you’d have to kill your own maiden in order to show defiance to the Two Fingers. As you are maidenless however, you’ll have to find another maiden.

Thankfully, an already dead maiden can be found at the Church of Inhibition, in north-eastern Liurnia of the Lakes, right next to the Site of Grace there.

Interact with her and you will receive Lord of Blood’s Favor (Dyed). Return this to Varre at the Rose Church and he will announce that you are now a formal inductee and do a weird bloody ritual with your finger. In exchange, you will receive the Bloody Finger, an item that allows you to invade other players endlessly, unlike the Festering Bloody Finger which get consumed after each invasion.

Speak to Varre again and he will give you the Pureblood Knight’s Medal, an item that grants you an audience with Luminary Mohg, by teleporting you to the Mohgwyn Palace, very close to the Dynasty Mausoleum Entrance Site of Grace. He will warn you not to use it just yet, as the Mohgwyn dynasty has not begun. After you reload the area, Varre will have left the area.

However, you have no reason to listen to Varre anymore, as there is no benefit to waiting. Using the Pureblood Knight’s Medal will be the fastest and easiest way to get to the Mohgwyn Palace in order to fight Mohg, Lord of Blood, a Shardbearer boss with great rewards.

Requirements: Complete Varre’s second and last quest by giving him the Lord of Blood’s Favor (Dyed).

You will encounter Varre one last time in the Lord of Blood’s domain, aka the Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum, a secret area inside the Siofra River. To enter this area, you must either use the Pureblood Knight’s Medal that Varre gives you at the end of his second quest, or by using a teleporter located in the west side of the Consecrated Snowfields, a secret area located west of the Mountaintops of the Giants.

To find Varre, teleport to the Dynasty Mausoleum Midpoint Site of Grace and head west, back into the mausoleum. There will be a red sign on the floor almost immediately after entering the mausoleum, that you can interact with in order to invade Varre’s world and fight him. He’s pretty strong, so take care! There are no consequences to dying in his world – you can attempt to fight him as many times as you like, but it still feels bad to get taunted by this sneaky guy!

After defeating Varre in his world, head back to where his invasion sign was in your world. He will be lying there, dying. Interact with him and he will die, leaving some items behind — the most important of which will be Varre’s Bouquet, his signature weapon.

This marks the end of Varre’s quest. Some players have reported that they were unable to see his invasion sign after defeating the Mohg, Lord of Blood boss fight, so if you want his Varre’s Bouquet, make sure to invade his world before defeating Mohg, just to be sure.
