Shadowheart Life Cleric

Life Domain Cleric Support Guide

This Life Domain Cleric is a dedicated support build for keeping a high-value frontline or carry alive while improving the whole party’s consistency. It is built around healing-triggered item effects, damage prevention, emergency recovery, and strong concentration spells rather than raw healing spam.

The build is meant to synergize cleanly with a Shadow Blade carry, especially the Fighter-Hexblade Multiclass Carry Build and the Fighter-Hexblade Multiclass Non-Carry Build. It also fits naturally beside the Oath of the Crown Paladin Support Build.

If you are not supporting a companion using Shadow Blade, keep the core healing package but shift more prepared spells and item slots toward Radiating Orb and Reverberation setups. That variant trades some pure protection for stronger enemy accuracy reduction, knockdown pressure, and battlefield control.

Starting Ability Scores and Respecialization

Starting spread
  • STR 10, DEX 14, CON 14 (+1), INT 8, WIS 14 (+2), CHA 12.
  • This gives enough Dexterity for initiative and armour flexibility, enough Constitution to protect concentration, and a practical Wisdom baseline for Cleric spells.
Respec after Khalid’s Gift
  • After collecting and using Khalid’s Gift, respecialize with Withers to: STR 12, DEX 14, CON 14 (+1), INT 8, WIS 13 (+2), CHA 12.
  • Khalid’s Gift supplies the missing +1 Wisdom, so the build keeps the same practical Wisdom breakpoint while freeing points for STR.
Skill path
  • From the Cleric skill list, prioritize Insight and either Medicine or Religion.
  • If your race or background grants access to Perception, take it. This build is often positioned safely, so it is a good character to detect traps, ambushes, and hidden objects.
  • Persuasion is acceptable because the build starts with 12 Charisma, but it is not the main reason to bring this character.

Core Build Mechanics

Life Domain healing engine
  • Disciple of Life adds extra healing to healing spells, which makes small bonus-action heals much more efficient.
  • Preserve Life is the build’s main emergency button. Because it uses Channel Divinity Charges, it does not spend spell slots and can stabilize several damaged allies at once.
  • Blessed Healer gives the cleric self-sustain while healing others, making it easier to maintain Warding Bond and concentration pressure.
Healing-rider package

The strongest part of this support build is not the raw HP number. It is the number of defensive and offensive effects attached to one cheap heal.

True Love’s ring package
  • Wear True Love’s Embrace on the cleric and put True Love’s Caress on the tank or carry. This gives access to Warding Bond through the paired rings.
  • Warding Bond gives the bonded ally resistance to all damage plus extra AC and saving throws, but the caster takes matching damage. Do not treat it as free mitigation.
  • The ring-based Warding Bond effect can persist after the rings are unequipped until death or a Long Rest. That keeps item slots open after setup.
  • Cheese option: you can put True Love’s Embrace on a camp character to redirect the damage away from the active party. That is an exploit-style use case; the clean version is to run it on this cleric and protect concentration properly.
Prepared spell priorities

Recommended Origin Party Members

Practical party structure: run Shadowheart as this Life Domain support if your Tav or The Dark Urge is not the cleric, then pair her with either Lae’zel or Karlach as the primary bonded frontliner. Add Wyll if you want the strongest origin-story justification for a The Hexblade carry.

Gear Plan by Slot

Headwear
  • Early: Wapira’s Crown is the best early support helmet because it heals you when you heal allies.
  • Radiating variant: Holy Lance Helm is strong if you are using Radiating Orb gear and forcing misses.
  • Late: Helm of Balduran is the strongest defensive head slot if nobody else needs it more. It adds healing, AC, saving throws, stun immunity, and critical-hit protection.

Act 2 combat notes
  • Mass Healing Word is often used to apply Bless and Blade Ward to multiple allies, not because the heal number itself is huge.
  • Spirit Guardians plus Luminous Armour is strong in undead-heavy zones, but it asks the cleric to stand closer to danger.
  • Beacon of Hope is excellent before a planned healing burst, but do not force it when the action economy demands control, movement, or immediate recovery.

Act 3 Walkthrough

Rivington and Wyrm’s Crossing
Lower City support upgrades
Sorcerous Sundries, Devil’s Fee, and House of Hope
Wyrmway, House of Grief, and final upgrades

Playstyle Summary

  • Before combat, cast long-duration buffs such as Aid, Death Ward, Freedom of Movement, and Heroes’ Feast when available.
  • At the start of important fights, decide whether the cleric is a backline support or a Spirit Guardians control piece. Do not stand in melee by default unless your gear supports it.
  • Use Healing Word and Mass Healing Word to trigger Bless, Blade Ward, and other healing riders.
  • Use Preserve Life when multiple allies are damaged and you need efficient recovery without spending a spell slot.
  • Use Sanctuary on a vulnerable ally, a downed-recovery target, or the cleric after key setup is complete.
  • Keep the carry close enough to receive support, but not so close that area damage breaks the cleric’s concentration and punishes Warding Bond at the same time.
