General Info and Suggestions
This is a defensive Oath of the Crown Paladin built as a front-line support, bodyguard, aura carrier, and weapon buffer. The build is not trying to out-damage a dedicated striker. Its job is to stand where attacks are most likely to land, make those attacks inefficient, keep key allies inside its defensive radius, and improve the party’s best damage dealer with support spells.
The core idea is simple: force or encourage enemies to attack the Paladin, make those attacks miss or matter less, and let the rest of the party deal damage safely. Champion Challenge and Compelled Duel push enemies toward attacking you instead of your damage dealers. Protection imposes Disadvantage on attacks against nearby allies while you carry a Shield. Aura of Protection improves nearby saving throws with your Charisma modifier, and Divine Allegiance lets you protect a nearby ally at the cost of taking radiant damage yourself.
This build has very strong synergy with a dedicated carry or hypercarry setup, especially the Fighter-Hexblade Multiclass Non-Carry and the Fighter-Hexblade Multiclass Carry Build. It also pairs well with a second healer/control support such as the Cleric Support Build.
Respecialization and Feat Notes
- After obtaining the Amulet of Greater Health, respecialize with Withers and replace Resilient: Constitution at level 4 with Ability Improvement: +2 Charisma. The amulet sets Constitution to 23 and grants Advantage on Constitution Saving throws, so the original Constitution feat becomes much less valuable.
- Birthright is excellent once you reach Act Three because it increases Charisma by +2, up to 22. Higher Charisma improves Aura of Protection, Command, Compelled Duel, Champion Challenge, and social checks.
- Cloak of Displacement has high synergy with this build. You are deliberately inviting attacks, and the cloak gives attackers Disadvantage against you until you take damage. Before Act Three, use Cloak of Protection for the clean +1 to Armour Class and saving throws.
- Until you acquire Elemental Weapon, keep Magic Weapon prepared. Magic Weapon is a strong early concentration buff for your main damage dealer’s weapon. At Paladin level 9, Elemental Weapon becomes the preferred weapon buff because it adds elemental damage and improves attack rolls.
- Once your real combat Armour Class is around 25 or higher, consider respeccing the level 8 Defensive Duellist feat into Ability Improvement: +2 Charisma. Keep Defensive Duellist if you are still being hit often and you are using a compatible Finesse main-hand weapon. It only protects against melee attacks and only matters when the added AC can turn the attack into a miss.
Core Combat Loop
- Keep your Paladin close to the ally most likely to be targeted. Protection and Divine Allegiance require very short positioning, while Aura of Protection rewards keeping the party within the aura radius.
- Use Champion Challenge, Compelled Duel, and Command to control dangerous enemies. The goal is not just crowd control; the goal is to decide who enemies are allowed to attack.
- Use Righteous Clarity on the party member who must land attacks. It is especially valuable on a martial carry using Great Weapon Master, Sharpshooter, Booming Blade, or other high-value attacks.
- Use Lay on Hands, Turn the Tide, and later Warden of Vitality to trigger healing gear. The Whispering Promise adds a Bless effect to healed targets, Hellrider’s Pride and The Reviving Hands add Blade Ward, Boots of Aid and Comfort add temporary hit points, and Ring of Salving adds extra healing.
- Keep Magic Weapon or Elemental Weapon on the party’s main weapon attacker whenever concentration economy allows it. This is often better than spending your spell slots on low-impact smites.
- Allies with Sentinel are excellent next to this Paladin. If enemies try to ignore your front line, Sentinel punishes movement and creates more control around the Paladin’s defensive zone.
Act 1 Walkthrough
Early Act 1: Beach, Grove, and Goblin Camp
Underdark and Grymforge
- In the Underdark, visit Ebonlake Grotto. Buy Amulet of Restoration from Derryth Bonecloak for free casts of Healing Word and Mass Healing Word. Complete Help Omeluum Investigate the Parasite to unlock Ring of Salving from Omeluum.
- Phalar Aluve is an optional support weapon if no other party member needs it. It is a finesse longsword with Sing and Shriek, so it can fit a shield Paladin and still keep Defensive Duellist online. Do not force it if another character uses it better.
- At the Adamantine Forge, craft Adamantine Splint Armour and usually Adamantine Shield. You only get limited Mithral Ore, and this build makes excellent use of both. The armour gives high AC, damage reduction, immunity to critical hits, and applies Reeling to melee attackers. The shield adds AC, critical-hit immunity, Shield Blow, and can also apply Reeling when enemies miss you.
- If you must choose only one Adamantine item for this character, prioritize Adamantine Splint Armour. The armour is the stronger defensive centerpiece, while the shield is excellent but partly overlaps if the armour already prevents critical hits.
- If your party uses Illithid Powers, consider the Awakened permanent bonus from the Zaith’isk in Crèche Y’llek. It lets illithid powers use a bonus action, but the saving throws are punishing if failed. This is powerful, but roleplay- and risk-dependent.

Lower City and Final Gear
- Buy Birthright from Sorcerous Sundries through Lorroakan’s Projection or Rolan, depending on your story state. This is the best offensive/support helmet for the Paladin because Charisma improves your aura, spell DCs, and dialogue checks.
- Buy The Reviving Hands from Vicar Humbletoes at the Stormshore Tabernacle. These are the late-game upgrade over Hellrider’s Pride because they apply Blade Ward on healing and interact better with self-healing.
- Buy Armour of Persistence from Dammon at the Forge of the Nine if he survived. This is the most support-friendly final armour: 20 AC, damage reduction, and permanent Resistance plus Blade Ward.
- Retrieve the Amulet of Greater Health from the Archive in the House of Hope. After this, respecialize and move the level 4 feat from Resilient into Ability Improvement: +2 Charisma.
- Helm of Balduran from Ansur is the main defensive helmet alternative to Birthright. It gives healing, +1 AC, +1 saving throws, stun immunity, and critical-hit immunity. Choose Birthright when you want maximum aura and control strength; choose Helm of Balduran when survival is the priority.
- Helldusk Armour from Raphael is an alternative final armour if you prefer 21 AC, fire resistance, damage reduction, and flight. For this specific build, Armour of Persistence is usually more on-plan because its defensive passives directly support the tanking role.
- Viconia’s Walking Fortress from Viconia DeVir during Daughter of Darkness is the strongest shield-style option if your story route gives access to it. It gives very high AC and strong spell defense. If you keep Adamantine Shield, you retain critical-hit immunity and Reeling utility instead.
- Mirror of Loss in the House of Grief is the most important Act 3 permanent-buff stop for this Paladin. Aim for +2 Charisma if possible; Patriar’s Memory can also grant +1 Charisma. This process can involve checks, curses, and one-character limitations, so do it carefully and only after you understand the mirror’s rules.

Origin Party Member Recommendations
- Shadowheart: The best story-and-mechanics support partner. She is a High Half-Elf Cleric origin character tied heavily to Shar, Selûne, Nightsong, and Daughter of Darkness. Mechanically, she can be respecced into Life Domain and follow the Cleric Support Build, giving the party a second healing engine while this Paladin focuses on positioning, auras, and weapon buffs.
- Wyll: The best thematic martial-caster partner for a noble defender party. He is a Human Warlock origin character with the The Blade of Frontiers story, unique Mizora involvement, and built-in rapier proficiency through The Blade of Frontiers. In Patch 8, respeccing him toward Hexblade fits both his story and the party role. He benefits heavily from Righteous Clarity, Elemental Weapon, and defensive coverage from this Paladin.
- Lae’zel: The best pure martial carry option. She is a Githyanki Fighter with the The Githyanki Warrior questline and excellent natural fit for a high-damage weapon build. She makes very good use of Magic Weapon, Elemental Weapon, Righteous Clarity, and Sentinel. Bring her if you want the party’s main damage dealer to be direct, durable, and weapon-focused.
- Karlach: The best alternative to Lae’zel if you want a more heroic tiefling route and the unique Soul Coin combat mechanic. She is a Zariel Tiefling Barbarian whose story depends heavily on Dammon and Infernal Iron. She appreciates the Paladin’s defensive coverage because she wants to stay aggressive and close to enemies.
Recommended default party: this Oath of the Crown Paladin, Shadowheart as the Cleric Support Build, Wyll as the Fighter-Hexblade Multiclass Non-Carry Build or a Hexblade variant, and either Lae’zel or Karlach as the second martial pressure piece.
Do Not Miss
Final playstyle: keep the party tight, keep the Paladin visible and difficult to kill, force enemies into bad target choices, and spend concentration on the weapon attacker who ends fights fastest. This build wins by making the rest of the party safer and more accurate, not by chasing personal damage numbers.
