Aurelius — The Umbral Harbinger
There are warriors who fight in the light.
And then there are those who become the darkness itself.
Aurelius is the latter.
Once a high elf of unknown past, his life was torn apart when he was abducted by mind flayers and dragged aboard a nautiloid vessel. His memories were stripped away, his mind fractured, leaving behind only fragments of a terrible truth: he carried within him the blood of the Dark Urge, a legacy tied to the murderous will of Bhaal.
That urge demanded slaughter.
It whispered constantly.
But Aurelius refused to obey.
After learning that his past had been manipulated by the ruthless assassin Orin the Red, Aurelius made a decision that would define the rest of his life. If the darkness inside him could not be destroyed, then it would be weaponized.
Evil would be its only prey.
Thus was born the legend of the Umbral Harbinger.
Where others charge into battle, Aurelius simply vanishes. One moment he stands in plain sight — the next he dissolves into shadow. The battlefield becomes his hunting ground, darkness bending around him like a living cloak.
His fighting style is terrifyingly efficient:
- The hardened discipline of a Fighter, granting him relentless physical mastery.
- The supernatural stealth and mobility of a Way of Shadow Monk, allowing him to move between darkness itself.
- The lethal precision of a Thief Rogue, striking again and again before enemies can respond.
Aurelius does not wage war with brute force.
He ends fights before they begin.
Enemies collapse with silent strikes to the throat, pressure points shattered by devastating monk techniques, or blades appearing from darkness before anyone realizes he has moved. When surrounded, he becomes a blur of motion — fists, kicks, and steel flowing together with impossible speed.
Many who witness his combat swear he is not entirely mortal.
Some whisper that Aurelius is a demigod walking among mortals, a being whose connection to shadow itself grants him unnatural power.
Whether that is true or not hardly matters.
What matters is this: Aurelius hunts monsters with the efficiency of a nightmare.
Despite the terrifying reputation surrounding him, Aurelius is not cruel. He is deeply heroic, determined to save as many lives as possible and ensure that the horrors of the world do not claim more victims.
But he is also pragmatic.
He understands that evil often hides behind masks — noble titles, political influence, false mercy. When those masks fall, Aurelius does not hesitate to act.
Justice, to him, is not always gentle.
Sometimes justice must come from the dark.
So when the night grows quiet and shadows stretch across the streets of Baldur’s Gate, criminals begin to feel an unexplainable dread.
Because somewhere in that darkness, a silent figure may already be watching.
Waiting.
Preparing to strike.
Aurelius walks a fragile line between monster and hero — a creature born from darkness who refuses to surrender to it.
He is still a monster.
Just not for the innocent.
For them, he is salvation.
For evil, he is the last shadow they will ever see.
