This build turns you into a living anchor—slowly sweeping the fight under your control as enemies crash against your defenses and shatter. This setup isn’t about racing for damage numbers; it’s about dictating movement, locking down space, and punishing anything foolish enough to close in.
• Lockdown Presence: Your armor and resistances let you plant yourself wherever the fight is thickest.
• Reactive Punishment: Every hit against you becomes a mistake the enemy regrets.
• High-Value Control: You’re not chasing enemies—you’re making them adapt to you.
• Team Utility: As pressure funnels toward you, your party gains room to maneuver, cast, and strike freely.
• Snowball Effect: The longer the fight goes, the harder it is for enemies to break past your icy defenses.
This build’s playstyle really isn’t viable till level 6. I suggest using a pure Hexblade for the first 6-7 levels before swapping to this [Get to level 10 for best results before switching – IMHO]. You can do this with any race, but I strongly recommend starting as a High Half-Elf for the cantrip, as it will come in handy when dealing damage, especially when using the build before it’s fully put together. If you decide to follow this from level 1, be sure to start with the Cantrip – Ray of Frost, and on respec, switch it to Fire Bolt, since you’ll get Ray of Frost @ level 3. You might also want to do a different stat spread until you swap.
How to Play :
> Armour of Agathys – ALWAYS cast Rank 6 or highest tier available.
> Cast Abjuration spells to get the ward up
> Stack Arcane Ward (20 Stacks Max @ level 12) – Can short rest to recover them as well
> Cast Light on your weapon, which will trigger two instances of damage riding from the effect of the rings.
> Fire Shield [For Reflect] (CHILL)
> Wet enemies when possible for more DMG (2x AOA DMG)
> Try always to have HASTE up before the fight starts
> The playstyle involves starting your day by casting AOA at its highest rank, as well as making sure the party has Longstrider. After that, you’ll probably want to use the amulet ability to get your spell slot back and conjure an Elemental – I personally enjoy the Water or Fire Myrmidon, depending on whether I am playing a solo run or with a group. Then attack and after use your bonus action to attack a second time, and then run around the enemy in hopes of triggering an opportunity attack, causing them to take big damage. Especially if they are wet. Cast abjuration spells to get your ward count back up after it goes down, and manage your resources. Your best source of AOE damage is going to come from Glyph of Warding, so use it whenever you get the mobs to clump up around you or position yourself in a way to get them to stack nicely before the fight even begins.
