Avaella the Deathmage

So I messed up in publishing this build so badly that I’ve lost all my work on it originally, so here’s my best attempt to recreate it and publish it without saving over it with a different build lol.

This is a necromancy Dark Urge build with a hybrid play-style (in that it is a character who does both ranged and melee a roughly equal amount).

Mod Disclaimer

I use mods when playing BG3, so some of my build plays very differently than what vanilla BG3 plays like. They can effect both gameplay mechanics and also roleplay. If you want to know what my actual spell list and cantrips look like, see the Notes section below. Since I play on console and BG3’s console modding is accessible to both console players and PC players I am listing the mods which define how this build might play below in case anyone wants to give these mods a try for themselves.

  1. “UnlockLevel…”
  2. Gods
  3. Mystra’s Spells
  4. Dawnstar’s Telekinesis Spells
  5. Dawnstar’s Necromancy Spells
  6. Dawnstar’s Water Spells
  7. Initiate Feats mod
  8. Improved Feats
  9. Hunter’s Mark Mod

Party Combination

Though this is a build for the player, I wanted to give you an idea as to what my game might look like with the party members. Feel free to disregard if you have your own approach. For this particular character I will be running a multi-discipline wizard college approach. Basically? Everyone’s at least a little wizard-y.

(m) means melee, (r) means ranged, and (m, r) means hybrid melee/ranged.

  1. (m) Lae’zel – *Psi Warrior Fighter /
  2. (r) Shadowheart – Arcane Archer Fighter 11 / Stars Druid 02 / Transmutation Wizard 06 / Life Cleric 01

Act 03:

Abilities Get Reallocated?

Yes I reallocate my ability points with Withers when I pick up a gear piece which effects how many points an ability has. Here is when, why, and how I go about doing that:

Act 01:

Act 1.5:

Act 02:

Act 03:

Notes

  1. I generally treat the Underdark and Mountain Pass as it’s own mini act, hence why I refer to an “Act 1.5”.
  2. I am not using Tiamat as my deity, but I am adding a deity mod which allows me to use Bhaal as my deity and get the dialogue lines presented in EA. (“mod name”.) I am listing Tiamat here because of the evil alignment, she’s just the evil god that pops into my head to use when I need an example.
  3. I am not actually using the “Thief” Rogue subclass, I will be using the Phantom Rogue Subclass mentioned in the mod list above. Thief is just the closest I can get using EIP’s builder that doesn’t add benefits that would screw w/things discreetly (assassin) or add too many benefits to make the build information confusing (swashbuckler/trickster).
  4. Some of the spells below I replace not because they are not desirable, but because they can be learned through spell scrolls and some of the other spells just can’t. We like the ‘learn spell’ option in this house.

Leveling Notes

  1. Lv. 1: Instead of “True Strike” for my High Elf’s racial cantrip I’m actually using “Prestigiation” from a mod.
  2. Lv. 1: Instead of “Blade Ward”, “Shocking Grasp”, and “Dancing Lights” cantrips I am using “Pain Puppet”, “Bone Dust Tongue”, and “Pluck Life” from Dawnstar’s Necromancy Spells Mod. For spells I am using “Seance” and “Witches Spill” rather than “Disguise Self” and “Witchbolt”.
  3. Lv. 2: Instead of “Grease” and “Fog Cloud”, I substituted them with “Stone Sap” and “Rock Barrage” from Dawnstar’s Telekinesis Spells. This was also where I picked up my first extra feat “Magic Initiate: Ranger”.
  4. Lv. 3: “Blood Offering” and “Soul Prism” from Dawnstar’s Necro Spells instead of “Knock” and “Enlarge/Reduce”.
  5. Lv. 4: “Drowning Grip” from Dawnstar’s Water Spells and “Force Weapon” (I think from Mystra’s Spells?) rather than “Hold Person” and “Misty Step”. “Bursting Sinew” cantrip remains unchanged. “Alert” Feat remains unchanged.
  6. Lv. 5: “Soul Bomb” and “Death Ray” from Dawnstar’s Necromancy Spells instead of “Fireball” and “Haste”.
  7. Lv. 6: “Spirit Shroud” added to Wizards from Mystra’s Spells (?), “Tasha’s Mind Whip” from Mystra’s Spells instead of “Bestow Curse” and “Feign Death”.
  8. Lv.7: “Storm of Souls” and “Mortalis Aeterna” from Dawnstar’s Necromancy Spells instead of “x” and “x”.
  9. Lv. 8: “Mental Barrier” and “Antagonize” from Mystra’s Spells instead of “Evard’s Black Tentacles” and “Phantasmal Killer”. Feat: War Caster (adjusted by mod, 17 INT to 18 INT).
  10. Lv. 9: “Death March” and “Grave Binder” from Dawnstar’s Necromancy Spells instead of “Greater Invisibility” and “Fire Shield”.
  11. Lv. 10: “Sapping String” cantrip instead of “Bone Chill”. “Steel Wind Strike” and “Macabre Explosion” from Mystra’s Spells (?) rather than “Cloudkill” and “Blight”.
  12. Lv. 11: “True Seeing” from Mystra’s Spells and “Final Offering” from Dawnstar’s Necromancy Spells rather than “Circle of Death” and “Create Undead”.
  13. Lv. 12: First part of Rogue dip. No spells.
  14. Lv. 13: 2nd Rogue level. Feat:
  15. Lv. 14:
  16. Lv. 15:
  17. Lv. 16:
  18. Lv. 17:
  19. Lv. 18:
  20. Lv. 19:
  21. Lv. 20:

Feats Notes

Other Feats I am using (via a mod that grants more feats): (lv.2) “Magic Initiate: Ranger” (see below for the mod which adds it as a feat option), (Lv. #, Rogue lv. 2) “x”.

The feats which were adjusted by “x” a feat mod that makes changes to pre-existing feats in addition to adding some. I will not list all that it adds, but I will list that which I sourced from it:

  1. “Magic Initiate: Ranger” and the spell it adds: Hunter’s Mark (which is itself adjusted in mod listed above).
  2. “War Caster” is adjusted to increase a spell casting ability of your choice by 1 (I picked INT).
