Crafting in Starfield is similar to the settlements and crafting systems in Fallout 4. In fact, the crafting categories are almost identical, although they are organized a bit differently. In this guide, we’ll take a look at how crafting works in Starfield and the types of crafting you can do.
How Crafting Works
You’re able to add crafting and research stations to your outposts and spaceships. You can also find them scattered throughout the Settled Systems.
The Research Laboratory will allow you to learn new and improved recipes for crafting. Projects that are currently being researched will appear in the main menu when you open the research laboratory. You can also see how many projects are currently available to research in each category.
Once a recipe has been unlocked, you’ll need to use a crafting station to build it. Each category has its own crafting station. There is also an Industrial Workbench which can be used to craft components to make other items. Items are crafted using resources and components that you collect in your travels. Each crafting category also has an associated Skill that improves the items you make with it.
Crafting Categories
There are five main crafting categories in Starfield:
Pharmacology
Food and Drink
Outpost Development
Equipment
Weaponry
We’ll take a look at each of these categories in the sections below.
Pharmacology
Pharmacology is improved by the Chemistry skill. It allows for the crafting of med packs and chemical enhancements. Pharmacology items can be crafted at a Pharmaceutical Lab.
Food and Drink
Food and Drink are improved through the Gastronomy skill. There is quite a variety of foods in the game. Most of them restore health. Some of them also restore O2. Food and Drink items can be crafted at a Cooking Station.
Outpost Development
Outpost Development is improved through the Outpost Engineering skill. It allows you to build settlements on planets and moons that you visit, which can then be crewed and used to harvest resources.
Equipment
Equipment crafting will allow you to create modifications for spacesuits, helmets, and packs. Equipment crafting is improved through the Spacesuit Design skill and modifications can be crafted at the Spacesuit Workbench.
Weaponry
Weapons can be modified with sights and scopes, larger magazines, grips and barrels, suppressors, and special ammunition like explosive rounds. Melee weapons are also in the game and may be upgradable. Weapon modifications are improved with the Weapon Engineering skill and crafted at a Weapon Workbench.

I love RPGs, sandboxes, survival, and sim games. Anything that lets me build and decorate or just has a really good story. I've spent hundreds of hours in Bethesda games and even more time modding them. I also play a lot of World of Warcraft.
