Like the Dungeons & Dragons classes they’re based on, each spellcasting class in Baldur’s Gate 3 draws their magic from a different source. For Wizards, that source is research. They are the magical scholars and academics of the Forgotten Realms, acquiring their power through study and practice rather than innate talent or gifts from gods or other patrons.
Whether you’re playing as a wizard or just trying to manage Gale‘s spellbook, you’ll need to know how to learn spells from scrolls. Only wizards can learn spells in this way, and as a wizard it’s the method through which you’ll collect the majority of your spells. This guide will walk you through the process.
Where to Find Scrolls
First you’ll have to find scrolls that you can learn from. Unfortunately, the game doesn’t mark scrolls in a way that will help you see which ones you can use. For you to learn a spell from a scroll, it needs to be:
A spell of a level that you can cast with your current spell slots
Scrolls can be found at merchants as well as among loot from containers and corpses. Sometimes you will even find them laying around on tables and shelves. Keep your eyes open, and if you can’t learn a spell yet, hold onto its scroll for later. Just be careful not to cast it by mistake. Once a scroll is used, it’s destroyed and you won’t be able to learn the spell from it.
How to Learn Spells from Scrolls
Once you have a scroll (or several scrolls) that your wizard should be able to learn from, you’ll need to open your wizard’s spellbook. From here the process will depend on whether you’re using a keyboard or controller.
Keyboard
If you’re using a keyboard, the default hotkey for the spellbook is K. You can also open the spellbook by clicking on the spellbook icon in the top center of the inventory screen. With the spellbook open, look for the book icon with the plus sign on the right side. It will say Learn More Spells when you hover over it. Click it to open the Transcribe Scroll to Spellbook window.
Here you’ll see a list of scrolls that you have in your possession (these can be in any party member’s inventory), along with their spell level and the cost to learn them. Spells from your wizard’s spell school cost half as much to learn as other spells.
If you have the gold and high enough spell slots to learn from a scroll, you will be able to check the box beside it. Once you’ve selected all of the spells you’d like to learn, click the Learn button. You will spend your gold and the scroll(s) will be destroyed, but you will now be able to prepare and use the spells just like any others you have learned.
You can also simply right-click a scroll in your inventory and click the “Learn Spell” option, although this will be greyed out if your Wizard level isn’t high enough.
Controller
If you’re using a controller, use the right trigger to open the Shortcut Menu, then use the right joystick to select Spellbook and open it with /. Then use / to open the Transcribe Scroll to Spellbook window.

I love RPGs, sandboxes, survival, and sim games. Anything that lets me build and decorate or just has a really good story. I've spent hundreds of hours in Bethesda games and even more time modding them. I also play a lot of World of Warcraft.
