How to Change Companions – Baldur’s Gate 3

Party composition in Baldur’s Gate 3 is very important; it’s common practice to have a well-balanced team while exploring and fighting in order to handle any situation. If you’re confused about how to swap out party members, don’t worry, you’re in the right place. We’ll first go over how to make space for characters when you’re first recruiting them, then delve into how you will swap them for the rest of the game, i.e., at camp.

At the very start of the game, you will be perusing a smallish area and recruiting characters. After you have three companions in your party (or four total, counting the avatar), you will need to disband someone from the group in order to recruit a new person to the party. This can be done by simply talking to the companion you want to leave and telling them to go to camp – don’t fret, you can always have them rejoin later. Now that you have an open spot, the new person can join your party.

Companions are feisty when dismissed, but it won’t affect how they feel about you

Conversely, if you don’t want the new recruit in your party right away, you can tell them to go to the camp where they’ll be available later on. It is worth noting that we haven’t encountered any party members disapproving (hurting the relationship with the avatar) when they are sent to camp.

Now let’s talk about how you will be changing out the well-established members of the adventuring group by going to your camp. At any time while you’re exploring, you can go to camp by simply clicking on the little campfire icon in the bottom-right of the screen, then clicking ‘go to camp'(1). If you’re playing with a controller, you will have to go to the map (pressing button xbox pause) then press button xbox y v2 (2).

Once you’re at camp, you can do all sorts of amazing things, like using camp supplies to have a long rest. However, what you’ll want to do to change your party composition is talk to your companions. First, find the party member in camp that you no longer want in your party, and while talking to them ask for them to stay in camp. You can see which companions are currently in your party by looking on the left side of the screen.

Next, as you’ve likely guessed, you will head over to the party member that you want to gallivant with you through Faerûn. Ask them to join your party, and that’s that! Don’t forget to level them up, or else they won’t be of much use to you. Now you can leave the camp (using the same buttons to get to camp), and wreak havoc on your enemies with your (hopefully) better companion.

What are your favorite companions so far? Did you find a certain chemistry between followers that is unstoppable? We would love to hear about it, leave a comment!
