It’s been seven months since we last got updates for the Phantom Liberty expansion for Cyberpunk 2077, but the Xbox Games Showcase trailer today has definitely given us a lot to think about. (Some of the quotes you will see below are from the interview Wccftech conducted with Gabe Amatangelo at Summer Game Fest 2023).
What We Know About the Story
Keanu Reeves is back to voice more of Johnny Silverhand, and we are due for a wild ride in a new mission featuring the voice of Idris Elba as a veteran sleeper agent Solomon Reed (just like Johnny, the character is made to look impressively like his voice actor). However, the story is more complicated than that.
Phantom Liberty’s story will take place after you mingle with Voodoo Boys in Pacifica. Songbird, a NUSA (New Unites States of America) Intelligence Analyst will reach out to you, promising yet another cure to the “the bomb ticking in your head”. In exchange, she needs you to head to Dogtown, the district where it so happens that the President of the New Unites States crashed her Space Force One. There are many reasons the authorities of this autonomous district will want President Rosalind Myers as a hostage. We know one of them as Kurt Hansen, “an ex New United States of America colonel who’s now this kind of military tyrant in this district that’s broken off of Night City”.
Though, you see, even if Songbird is President’s right hand, it’s not guaranteed that she can be trusted. This is where Solomon Reed (Idris Elba character) comes in: another sleeper agent (albeit working on the situation from a different angle) also offers to help V out. So therein lies a choice: which of the strangers seems to be more trustworthy? As we will see in the new trailer, Reed might not be as trustworthy himself…
Depending on the decisions you make during Phantom Liberty, a new ending for the game can be unlocked — so, pick your allies wisely!

New Content and Release Date
It’s worth noting that Dogtown will be a whole new district added to the map, with 3 sub-districts, so there will be a lot of new side quests, open-world activities (expect to handle some airdrops and courier missions!), weapons, vehicles, and even a new Relic skill tree, with a whole spread of abilities to experiment with!
The Phantom Liberty expansion is now set to release on September 26th, 2023, and can be pre-ordered for $29.99 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S|X.
Are you feeling excited for the new expansion? Will it get you to hop back into the game?
