Where to Find the Rope Gun – Sons of the Forest

The island in Sons of the Forest has a ton of verticality, so it’s essential having a rope gun to help you navigate cliffs quickly and safely. Also, while the rope gun itself is a key tool, you will also need it in order to obtain other items in the game that are requisites for progressing the story. Luckily, it can be found in a pretty popular location that you will likely frequent often. Unluckily, you will have to brave a treacherous cave network to get to it.

On the western side of the island, there is a region that has many rivers crisscrossing the map. If you have already acquired the pistol, or found the 3D printer in the Entertainment Bunker, then you will be familiar with the area. In fact, the rope gun is in the cave closest to the location of the Entertainment Bunker.

Be sure to make a save location with a tarp and stick, then making a save file before entering. You can make a save location by going into your inventory (withbutton xbox dpad down/ computer key i t /playstation down button), panning to the top-right and selecting (with button xbox lefttrigger/icon mouse left click v2/playstation l2 button) a tarp. Place the tarp on the ground (with button xbox righttrigger/icon mouse left click v2/playstation r2 button) and prop it up with a stick by looking at a corner and pressing button xbox righttrigger/icon mouse left click v2/playstation r2 button again. Then you will have your own tent for sleeping and saving the game.

When you first arrive at the spot, the entrance will be boarded up; nothing a couple swings from your tactical axe can’t fix. Head inside and equip a light source with button xbox dpad left / computer key l t ; we personally prefer the lighter, but you can craft a torch if you so choose. Loot the first room for supplies, and continue down. You’ll come to a ledge overlooking a bigger room with enemies in it. Hug the wall to the right and sneakily work your way down to the floodlight. When you’re almost to the floodlight, you will find some meds on a rock; these will come in handy.

The cross will come in handy later

Take the supplies by the floodlight, including the cross, and go towards the opposite side of the room. There are two tactics here, you can dispatch the enemies in the room and proceed, or you can run past them. At the end of the passage there is a Sluggy trapped in a crevice in the wall. There is also a dead man with two timed bombs next to him. If you kill the enemies in the room behind you, you can simply poke the Sluggy with a crafted spear till it dies. If not, you will need to use a timed bomb to kill the Sluggy quickly and proceed (blowing up the Sluggy gives you an achievement).

A crafted spear is longer than its little arms

In the next area, you will want to put down another tarp tent, so you can save before marathon sprinting through to the Rope Gun. If you die, simply respawn, then exit to main menu and reload your save. This will help you save resources instead of respawning after you die and using meds to rejuvenate your health. Before saving your game, make sure you have full health, and aren’t thirsty, tired, or hungry. This is a long sprint, and you will want all the vitality possible.

Down the cavern will be another room with a floodlight; run past it on the left side. There will be enemies, just avoid them as best you can. You will see another floodlight and some bodies hanging by a weird drawing on the wall. In a couple steps, you will see baby mutants and crawling mutants that are conjoined; run around them. Jumping also helps to avoid their attacks. There are no turns in this room, just continue running in the same general direction.

The next room has a low ceiling and stream running through the middle; follow the stream. At the end of the stream will be lots of enemies, just keep running past them. Ahead, you will see a floodlight shining on some skeletons hanging from the ceiling, this is the right direction.

Essentially, you follow the floodlights

This passage will lead you into more mutant babies. After running past them, you will see three dead workers hanging from the ceiling. This part of the passage is a good spot to heal quickly if you’ve sustained damage.

Hug the left wall, and eventually you will turn left through a crevice that goes uphill slightly. Follow this passage while taking left turns, and you will find yourself in another room full of baby mutants. In the back of the room is a small hole in the wall; you will need to crouch (withbutton xbox rightstickpress/ left computer key ctrl t /playstation r3) to get through.

Be ready to crouch through this small hole

Run through this tunnel going straight (there will be a passage off to your left that is a dead end). You will find yourself in another wide room with a low ceiling. Again just run straight through — no turns here. At the end of the passage, it will veer right, and you will see another floodlight. Run past it on its right side and to the left will be another light. The rope gun is sitting next to this light in a case.

The rope to the exit is right above the rope gun

Be careful, though, because the light is atop a big drop-off. However, after picking up the rope gun, you can select the zip line just above it and slide down to safety. The exit from the caves is just up from where you drop off the zip line.

To use your new rope gun, you equip and press button xbox righttrigger/icon mouse left click v2/ playstation r2 button to fire a zip line, then you fire it again to place the end of the line. You can make grappling hooks for crafting zip lines at the 3D printer.
