Sons Of The Forest is one of those anticipated sequels that doesn’t give up its mysteries easily, and it feels like a great match for the kind of a game it’s supposed to be. Though, after all these months of silence after the last trailer, we finally got a nice little surprise from Endnight Games, about a day ago — Sons Of The Forest finally got a page on Steam, and with it a snippet of lore and some descriptions of the gameplay!
Complete with all the new theories about the game’s story and even an amusing little mismatch in the game’s description.
Game’s Description… And Its Own Little Mystery
First of all, here is what we got from the game’s description on the Steam page:
Sent to find a missing billionaire on a remote island, you find yourself in a cannibal-infested hellscape. Craft, build, and struggle to survive, alone or with friends, in this terrifying new open-world survival horror simulator.
Sons Of The Forest on Steam (May 6, 2022)
We can assume that the “cannibal-infested hellscape” here refers to the varieties of twisted, fused, and massive mutants, along with the packs of desperate lunging cannibals we have seen in the previous trailers.
While this game’s protagonist seems to be unrelated to the main character of The Forest (and, so far, they remain nameless), because of the island’s similarity to the setting of the original game, fans are still excited for the possibility of encountering Eric Leblanc within the infested woodlands. (And, we still have some members of the community speculating about Timmy’s appearance in the sequel, but there is nothing to officially confirm that so far.)
Now, there is one more little thing — at the time the Reddit user u/koningoliver took his screenshot of the Steam page, there was… a small difference in the game’s description. Specifically, in this sentence: “Craft, build, and struggle to survive, along or with friends and reproduce, in this terrifying new open-world survival horror simulator.” Granted, this could have easily been a little joke left in by the user, but would it be all that misplaced in a survival horror game? After all, one of the intended aspects of the game is to “protect yourself and those you care for“.
Perhaps the developers simply didn’t want to spoil the surprise…
Realistic Survival Gameplay — Changing Seasons
One thing that got the community talking is the section on “Changing Seasons” on the Steam Page. Here’s what it has:
Pluck fresh salmon directly from streams in spring and summer. Collect and store meat for the cold winter months. You’re not alone on this island, so as winter rolls in and food and resources become scarce you won’t be the only one looking for a meal.
Adapting to the environment as it changes throughout the year sounds pretty immersive and is a welcomed challenge. The feature has been discussed by the developers in earlier interviews, but its confirmation and the specific details are definitely very exciting to see: stockpiling meat and fighting against other “inhabitants” of the island during more scarce winter months can certainly add to the intended gritty experience.
Speaking of which — to complement the immersive survival interactions we have seen in the trailer, the Steam description introduces building in crafting in the game as: “Feel every interaction; Break sticks to make fires. Use an axe to cut out windows and floors. Build a small cabin, or a sea-side compound, the choice is yours.” Which, again, has certainly had a lot of us excited to see more and more about the realistic aspects of the game.
After all, the feeling of danger lurking around every corner could only feel more palpable when every raw piece of meat you bite into, and every branch you crack in half on your knee feels real to you. Hopefully, the developers will indulge us a little in the upcoming months.
If you would like to check things out yourself, here’s the link to the game on Steam, and here’s the corresponding Twitter announcement by the Endnight Games. Oh, did you at least read the description before you clicked “Add to your wishlist”? No? Well, we can’t blame you there.
