How to Find Haldor – Valheim

Haldor is a friendly NPC trader you can find while exploring the Black Forest in Valheim. As he was there pretty much from the start, he doesn’t have a specific theme like the traders added to Valheim with future patches. And so Haldor’s goods range from cosmetic hats to quality-of-life gear and items that unlock new mechanics, like the Fishing Rod.

Because Haldor spawns in a randomized spot within the Black Forest, one of the most common biomes in the game, it can be tricky to find him. But thanks to this guide, you’ll be able to find Haldor, trade with him, and learn what it is he sells.

Some quick facts about Haldor:

  • Creature type: NPC trader
  • Biome location: Black Forest
  • Specialty: Assorted goods
  • Notable items: Megingjord, Fishing Rod, Thunder Stone

Looking for a reclusive dwarf within the Black Forest can be quite a challenge. So, if you just can’t seem to find Haldor by simply exploring your world, we’ll also show you how to peer beyond the veil and see all of his possible spawns in your world.

Valheim worlds tend to be big, with numerous instances of any particular biome. The Black Forest where Haldor lives is one of the more common ones too. To save you from exploring every single bit of Black Forest, the game generates several possible spawn points for Haldor. These can’t be too close to your initial spawn location, but you generally won’t have to sail to the end of the world to find Haldor. Still, you should expect to do at least some sailing while searching for Haldor.

It’s easy to get lost in the Black Forest.

The Black Forest where Haldor lives is generally the first biome you enter once you leave the relative safety of the Meadows where you begin your game. So you should know what to expect from it once you set out to find Haldor – Greydwarfs, Skeletons, the occasional Troll, all hidden among the towering pine trees and the like. If you’re unsure what you’re looking at, Black Forests are indicated by the dark green patches dotted with trees on the map. If you hover your cursor over one, you’ll see Black Forest written in the top right corner of your map (1).

When you approach one of Haldor’s possible spawn locations, a white bag icon will appear on your map (2). From that point onward, this is where Haldor will stay in your world, discarding all other potential spawn points.

Moving closer to this bag icon will put you in sight of Haldor’s camp. This cozy place is protected by runes and a translucent dome that prevents enemies from entering it and bothering you while conduct your business with Haldor (3). Inside the dome you’ll meet Haldor the trader and his tame Lox Halstein, who you can naturally pet (4).

Since it can get pretty frustrating to run around Black Forests without finding the trader, you can always cheat a bit by heading over to valheim-map.world. You can enter your map seed there and see your entire world map, complete with possible trader spawn locations. Just keep in mind that the site is using quite a lot of resources, so don’t be alarmed if you experience some slowdowns while using it.

Figuring out your world’s seed can be tricky, but the site takes care of it. Simply upload your world files on the main page there (5), follow the pop-up instructions on how to locate them (6), and check Haldor in the menu on the left (7). This will show you all of his possible spawn points. Pick one, go there, and Haldor will be waiting for you there.

Once you find him, Haldor sells some really nice stuff that most characters want to have. The big standout there is the Megingjord belt that raises the default carry weight by 150. Since you start at 300 carry weight, this is an impressive 50% increase that will make the game’s progression feel much smoother to you.

Since Valheim is a crafting survival game, fishing is an activity that’s very much expected from it. If you fancy yourself an amateur angler, then Haldor will not only sell you your Fishing Rod, he will also be your primary source of common Fishing Bait you will need to actually catch some fish. As such, you might want to place a portal in his vicinity for easy access.

To buy these, as well as all the other good stuff Haldor sells, you’ll need Coins. You get them as drops from some enemies and loot from the chests you find during your travels. And if you need some extra currency, you can also sell all your Ambers, Amber Pearls, Rubies, and Silver Necklaces to Haldor.

When you initially find him, Haldor will offer you most of his goods. However, some of his stuff is locked behind you defeating the game’s bosses, namely The Elder and Yagluth. Chances are you will have defeated The Elder long before you discover Haldor. This will only leave Yagluth on your to-do list if you want to get access to all of Haldor’s goods.
