Building an Outpost
In the previous biomes, it was convenient to have one main base and then move all the resources there. Using a Cart to transport Copper and Tin ore from the Black Forest wasn’t an issue. Things get trickier in the Swamp. Chances are your starting island won’t even have a Swamp biome. You’ll need to build a boat and sail around to find one. But even if you have a Swamp relatively nearby, you’re not guaranteed it will have any Sunken Crypt dungeons.
The way to approach a Swamp biome is to build a Karve ship and sail from your main base until you find a promising Swamp biome. When making landfall on a new island, it’s usually a good idea to create a small outpost there. You’ll surround it with a wall to protect it from enemies, have some chests there to store the resources before you transport them back to your main base, and have a portal there so you can go between your base and the outpost as needed.
You can build your outpost around an existing Swamp structure
A crucial part of this strategy is to scout the biome before you start building the outpost. The main thing you want to see are the Sunken Crypt dungeons, as that’s where you’ll get all your Iron. Some Swamp areas don’t have those dungeons. Once you land inside a Swamp, run deeper in and look for the green torches indicating Sunken Crypts. After you make sure those are present nearby, then start building your outpost.

Getting Poison Resistance
A lot of the Swamp enemies, including its boss Bonemass, deal a lot of poison damage. Making sure you can withstand it is the key to your survival in the Swamp. There are two main ways to become resistant to poison in Valheim:
Poison Resistance Mead is the better way, as it makes you “Very Resistant” to poison. In other words, it makes you take 75% less poison damage while it’s active. The Root Mask makes you merely “Resistant,” which is just 50%. The mask also makes you take more damage from fire.
By the time you reach the Swamp, you’ll be able to brew your own Mead. We have a detailed guide to Mead and brewing it in particular. You’ll need the resources from the Black Forest to build a Mead Ketill (Tin x4, Copper x6, Leather Scraps x2), and then some Fermenters (Finewood x30, Bronze x5, Resin x10).
To brew Poison Resistance Mead you’ll need:
Honey x10
Thistle x5
Neck Tail x1
Coal x10
You’ll combine the ingredients in the Ketill to create a Mead base, then put that base inside a Fermenter. After 2 in-game days, you’ll collect 6 bottles of Poison Resistance Mead.

While the Root Mask doesn’t provide as great protection against Poison, it never runs out. And it’s part of the Root set that can serve you well throughout the Swamp and even in the Mountain biome. At first level, the Root Set will grant you:
24 Armour
15 Bow skill
Resistant to Poison
Weak to Fire
The pieces of the set require Root, Ancient Bark, Deer Hide and Leather Scraps. You get Root by fighting Abominations inside the Swamp. Ancient Bark is harvested from the Swamp’s Ancient Trees. Deer Hide is a drop from deer, and Leather Scraps come from boars.

Using a Hoe
The terrain in the Swamp is uneven and filled with treacherously deep pools of water. These waters oftentimes hide Leeches that are hard to see and can be annoying to deal with. Moving through water slows you down and if you go deep enough, stops you from attacking. Jumping over puddles consumes a lot of stamina too. So ideally, you’ll want to create a path for yourself through the biome where you don’t need to go in water.
The Hoe is invaluable there. Using its Level Ground feature will let you avoid pools and puddles and the Leeches lurking within. Keep in mind that while you won’t be trudging through water this way, it’s constantly raining in the Swamp. Meaning you won’t be able to escape the annoying Wet debuff while outside. The debuff lowers your regeneration across the board. You’ll want to have the Rested buff to counteract it.

Surtling Core Farm
As you progress through Valheim biomes, you’ll need more and more Surtling Cores for portals and crafting. The cores you can get inside the Black Forest won’t be enough. Luckily, the Swamp allows you to easily farm them. The biome frequently has geysers that act as spawners for Surtlings. Defeating them gives you Surtling Cores plus some Coal, another resource you’ll need a lot of.
While you can definitely fight those Surtlings manually, you can also automate the process. Since they’re beings of fire, having them spawn in water will instantly kill them, giving you easy access to more Surtling Cores than you’ll know what to do with.
You’ll need to find a geyser, clear out the Surtlings there, and then use a pickaxe to strike the earth and lower its level around the geyser so that it’s surrounded with Swamp water. Then, you can step back and watch the farm do its thing. Keep in mind that you’ll need to stay in the general vicinity of the geyser for the Surtlings to keep spawning there.

Hunting Wraiths and Abominations
Wraiths and Abominations are two rare monster types in the Swamp. They both drop resources that will help with your progression.
Abominations are fairly limited in what their resources can do. You’ll mostly use their drops for the Root set and a couple of ranged weapons in later biomes. These monsters lurk all throughout the Swamp. Simply run around the biome and you’ll eventually find some. For how big and scary they are, Abominations are quite easy to defeat. They’re vulnerable to fire and take full damage from slashing weapons. So either stay back and shoot fire arrows at them, or have a good shield, block their slow attacks, then respond with a few hits of a sword or an axe.
Either use a shield or a bow to defeat it
Wraiths are significantly more annoying. They mainly drop Chains. You’ll need them for a lot of progression-critical items. These include higher-tier armor and various crafting station improvements you’ll absolutely need. Wraiths only spawn at night. They usually do it high in the trees so even if one spawns near you, it’s possible to miss it. When hunting Wraiths, make sure it’s nighttime and keep looking up. When you see a Wraith, your best bet is to use fire arrows, as Wraiths are resistant to most other damage types. But since they don’t have that much health, parrying their attacks and then responding with a few quick strikes can also work.

Using Blunt Weapons
Blunt damage should be your go-to in the Swamp. Blobs, Oozers, Skeletons, and Bonemass are all vulnerable to blunt damage. And while Wraiths are resistant to it, they’re resistant to all physical damage types — but they get staggered easily, and blunt is the best damage type for it.
This means your preferred melee weapon for the Swamp should be a club of some sort. You’ll want to begin with a Black Forest-tier Bronze Mace (Wood x4, Bronze x8, Leather Scraps x3), and then once you start getting Iron in the Swamp, upgrade that to an Iron Mace (Wood x4, Iron x20, Leather Scraps x3).

Getting a Light Source
The Swamp is a dark biome. Even during daytime you’ll struggle to see anything there. This means you’ll need a light source. A Torch is nice, but by that point, you’ll want your hands to be occupied by higher-tier weapons or shields.
A great solution for this issue is the Dvergr Circlet. It’s one of the wares sold by Haldor the merchant in the Black Forest. Check out our guide for how to locate Haldor there. The circlet costs 620 Coins. It’s a helmet-type item. You wear it on your head and it will act as a mining helmet providing a perpetual source of light and keeping your hands free. All you sacrifice by wearing it is a bit of armour.
While you’re dealing with Haldor, also make sure to get the Megingjord belt for 950 Coins. This accessory raises your carry weight by 150. Having this bonus while hauling Iron through the Swamp will make your job a lot easier.
Dealing With the Wet Debuff
Due to the constant rain, you won’t be able to avoid the Wet debuff when traversing the Swamp. That’s why you’ll want to counterbalance it with the Rested buff. However, once you go inside the Sunken Crypt dungeon where you’ll be doing a lot of mining and fighting, you’ll want all the stamina you can get. That’s why whenever you step inside a dungeon, make sure to drop a Campfire by the entrance. It will quickly dry you off and save you from inefficiently wasting your resources. It will even refresh your Rested buff if you stick around for a bit.
Searching for Turnips
Turnips are quite similar to the Carrots you get in the Black Forest. They’re a crop you can cultivate and later turn into efficient food. Turnips don’t have quite as many uses as Carrots, but Turnip Stew will likely remain a part of your diet for a while, as it’s a great stamina food. And you do need some turnips for the Spice Rack improvement.
This means whenever you’re out exploring the Swamp, look for the signature yellow plants of wild Turnips. They can be easy to miss in the dark, but if you have a light source, you’ll be able to spot and harvest them. And then grow them back at your base with the Cultivator.

Finding the Bog Witch
The Bog Witch is a merchant you only find in the Swamp. She sells a lot of items that will let you brew advanced Meads. One in particular, Fragrant Bundle, will be of great use once you move on to the Plains biome. It will let you brew the Anti-Sting Concoction that will make your early adventures in the Plains significantly easier. On top of that, the Witch also sells the Serving Tray for 140 Coins, which unlocks the Feast system.
We have a detailed guide for locating the Bog Witch. In short, you’ll want to look for her in a Swamp biome that’s not directly adjacent to your starting location, but isn’t too far from it. When you approach her shop, a cauldron icon will appear on your map. Make your way inside and enjoy the Witch’s wares.
