The first boss most players will encounter in Palworld is Zoe and Grizzbolt, leaders of the Rayne Syndicate. This first “Tower Boss” is likely to be a greater challenge than any you’ve come across before, thanks to the high health, damage, and large moveset. Thankfully, we’ve got you covered: this guide will help you figure out how to defeat Zoe and Grizzbolt, including what Pals to bring, what equipment to use, and strategies to avoid every possible attack.
Zoe and Grizzbolt are the final task in the tutorial of Palworld, and for good reason: through the steps outlined in the tutorial, you are likely to be at or close to the ideal level to take on Zoe and Grizzbolt. Most players can expect to take on Zoe and Grizzbolt around player Level 15, after unlocking the Crossbow at Level 13. Any Pals they bring with should also be at or above this level, so that you can take full advantage of your level and their abilities.
As for Pals: Grizzbolt is an Electric Pal, meaning that he is weak against Earth Pals. Ideally, you will want to stock up on Earth Pals, then, especially Alpha Pals (Indicated with Asterisks). Some of the best Pals to put in your party are as follows:
Gummoss* (Earth /Leaf ): Gummoss are surprisngly effective against Zoe and Grizzbolt, and their Level 11 Alpha can be found on an island just to the West of the starting island.
Dumud (Earth ): On the northern spawn islands, you can find both regular Dumuds and their Alpha Variant. These derpy lil’ guys are excellent against Zoe and Grizzbolt.
Rushroar (Earth ): Great for keeping aggro off you, Rushroars can keep Zoe and Grizzbolt off their feet.
Fuddler (Earth ): Very common to find within Palworld’s many dungeons, Fuddlers have aggressive move sets that will keep Zoe and Grizzbolt off of you.
Hangyu (Earth ): Born from Rocky Eggs, Hangyu can be acquired surprisngly quickly. While they aren’t the best fighters, it is entertaining to threaten your enemies.
Chillet* (Ice /Dragon ): While Ice is not effective against Electric Pals, Chillet is an alpha that is nearby and easy to acquire against Zoe & Grizzbolt, and useful if you prefer mounted combat.
At the end of the day, however, you should also simply select Pals you enjoy using, so long as they aren’t at a type disadvantage against the Zoe and Grizzbolt (so no Water Pals).
Zoe and Grizzbolt Equipment
Before challenging Zoe and Grizzbolt, you should ensure that all equipment is fully repaired, and that you and your Pals are all fully fed. You should have the following equipment when you enter the Rayne Syndicate tower:
Common Shield (Technology Level 4)
Pelt Armour (Technology Level 12)
Crossbow (Technology Level 13)
At Least 200 Arrows (Technology Level 5)
Metal Spear (Technology Level 13)
Zoe and Grizzbolt Strategies
In general, Zoe and Grizzbolt are a fairly predictable boss, and most of their attacks can be dealt with in a similar fashion. However, your Pals aren’t quite as ready as you might be, and for that reason the key thing to keep in mind during the Zoe and Grizzbolt fight is to do one of two things:
If Zoe and Grizzbolt are targeting your Pals, you should be laying on damage and keeping an eye on your Pal’s HP, so you can withdraw them if they get hurt or against easily-avoidable attacks.
If Zoe and Grizzbolt are targeting you, you should be dodges attacks and firing back between them.
In general, it is usually not ideal to mount or carry Pals whose equipment you have during Tower Boss battles, and Zoe and Grizzbolt are no exception: mounting or carrying Pals reduces your ability to dodge and makes it more likely that any given attack will hit both you and your Pal. Instead, you should let your Pal attack Zoe and Grizzbolt on its own, just keeping an eye on its HP so you can withdraw it if need by.
Almost all attacks from Zoe and Grizzbolt begin when Grizzbolt brings his paws up to his face, summoning the power as Grizzbolt brings his paws back down. Because of this, you should take Grizzbolt’s paws coming to its face as a sign that you should be ready to dodge or recall your Pal, depending on who Grizzbolt is targeting.
Zoe and Grizzbolt have 7 different attacks, which you can dodge or avoid as follows:
Spark Blast
You can avoid the Lightning Ball attack by simply walking to the side, easily outrunning it.
Shockwave
Grizzbolt will walk towards you and bring his hands up to his face, before quickly bringing them down to disperse a shockwave. Grizzbolt walking toward you should be a sign to be ready for this or Lightning Claw.
Lightning Claw
Pals targeted by this move should be recalled.
This high-damage signature move starts with Grizzbolt bringing his arms back to charge the volley. Be prepared to dodge 3 times, always dodging just before Grizzbolt lands.
LIghtning Streak
This fast-moving lightning strike should be dodged right after it starts, and can be prepared for as soon as Grizzbolt brings his paws up to his face.
Lightning Spread
This quick-moving wave attack should be dodges right before the projectiles that make it up hit you.
Pillars can block this attack.
Lightning Spray
This steady spray of lightning bolts will fire 11 double-bolted shots. You should dodge the first bolt, and then strafe to the left or right to avoid the next 10.
Pillars can block this attack.
Lightning Beam
Pals targeted by this attack should be recalled.
Grizzbolt’s highest-damage attack, it will be telegraphed by a red beam from itself to its target. After a few seconds, it will fire a lightning beam. You can dodge this attack if you wait until just after the attack charges, but it is usually best to hide behind a pillar before it goes off.
Eventually, by reacting well to Grizzbolt’s attacks, using the right Pals and equipment, and staying focused, you will be able to take out Zoe and Grizzbolt. But that is just the first step of your journey! The other four tower bosses still remain, with the next Tower Boss being the Free Pal Alliance Tower’s Lily and Lyleen.
