While you can definitely play Valheim solo, the game is intended to be played together with others. And that means you might want to communicate with the other players. You have a chat window for that, and when playing together with friends, you’ll probably be using voice chat as well. But on top of that, Valheim gives us access to a series of emotes. This guide will teach you how to use those emotes and what they do.
How to Use Emotes
There are three main ways to use emotes:
Through the radial menu
Through chat
Through the developer console
Radial Menu
The radial menu, also known as the emote wheel, is perhaps the easiest way to use emotes. It works well with both keyboard and mouse, and a controller.
The default key to access the radial menu is T
Then move the mouse to choose the emote and click it
To open the radial emote menu on a controller, press and hold the Right Stick
Spin the Right Stick to select the desired emote, then press the Right Trigger
You can adjust how the radial menu looks in the Settings. Navigate to the Gameplay tab and click the big Radial Menu button. You can adjust the size of the emote wheel and its functionality there.

Chat
A simple way to use emotes when you have a keyboard is to simply type them in chat. When doing so, you’ll want to add a / before the emote. The great thing about this method is that when you hit Enter to open the chat window, you’ll see all available emotes listed right there.
A sample chat command to use an emote would look like /wave
Developer Console
A slightly more complicated but potentially the most convenient way to use emotes involves using the developer console. We have a detailed guide for how to enable and use console commands. But the short version related to emotes is as follows:
Enable the console in the Gameplay tab of the Settings menu
Open the console while in game by pressing F5
Type in devcommands and hit Enter
Type in bind [key] [emote] and hit Enter
This will allow you to bind a specific emote to a hotkey of your choosing. This way you’ll be able to hit the specified key and have your character perform the emote. You’ll be able to use emotes without stopping the action that way. Alternatively, you can manually type in any emote in the console and your character will perform it.
Note: The sit emote is boud to the X key by default. Using it allows your character to immediately begin resting.
This will bind the dance emote to the Y key
