Valheim is primarily a sandbox game where you can go anywhere and do anything. And while it has its share of rules and limitations, you can often circumvent them by using various console commands.
Initially, these commands were classified as cheats. They allow you to do things like spawning new items, instantly defeating enemies and teleporting. But these days they’re seen more as developer commands, as some of them let you do things like freeing the camera from your character to create more impressive screenshots.
This guide will help you enable console commands in Valheim and list all available commands along with instructions for using them.
How to Use Console Commands
Enable the console
Open the console
Activate console commands
Enter the desired command
Enable the Console
Before you can enter developer commands in Valheim, you’ll need to make sure you have access to the console. There are several ways to do this.
These days, the main one is to simply go into the Settings menu and in the Gameplay tab select the Enable Console option. This works for both the PC and Xbox versions of the game.
If you’re on PC, you can also override this setting through Launch Options.
In the Steam version, right-click Valheim, go to Properties and under Selected Launch Options add -console
In the Game Pass version, create a shortcut for Valheim, go into its Properties and add -console after the quotation marks of the Target field
Open the Console
On PC the default button to open the console is F5
On Xbox hit the combination of + + + +
Activate Console Commands
Before you can start entering all the other commands, you’ll need to type in devcommands into the console and hit Enter. This is easily done on PC. If you’re playing on an Xbox, you’ll either need to connect a keyboard or press the button on your controller to bring up the digital Xbox keyboard.
The devcommands setting persists only for your current session. If you leave the game, you’ll need to enter devcommands again before other console commands.
Keep in mind that usually console commands won’t work on dedicated servers. They’re reserved for the servers you host personally.
Entering Commands
Once you’re done with the previous steps, it’s time to enter the commands. Simply type the command in without any brackets or quotation marks. While certain commands and variables are capitalized, capitalization doesn’t matter so feel free to only use lowercase letters.
If commands come with variables, like entering a number or an item ID, put a space after the command and then enter the variable in the same way – without brackets or quotation marks. Then hit Enter to activate the command.
Valheim’s console has a pretty robust autocomplete feature. As you’re typing your commands in, it will suggest various ways to complete the command or variable. This can be especially helpful when you’re not quite sure what ID the item you’re looking to spawn has.

And before we get to the actual commands, it’s important to note that some commands can have permanent detrimental effects on your server. They can either ruin your progression or disable the save feature. So, if you’re looking to experiment with console commands, it’s best to create a backup for your world first.
Common Console Commands and How to Use Them
While there are dozens of console commands in Valheim, this section will cover some of the most common and universally helpful ones. Square brackets after the command will cover their variables when applicable. But when entering them, you don’t need the brackets.

Spawn
Spawn is one of the most useful commands. It allows you to spawn any object in the game right in front of you. You just need to know it’s ID. While the most reliable way to find an item’s ID is to look it up online, you can often figure it out yourself.
A good number of items have IDs very similar to their in-game name. You can start typing the name in the console and watch the autocomplete suggestions for what you need. This won’t work with every item, however. The Serving Tray, for example, has Feaster as its ID. And the game’s different types of fish have numbers in their IDs instead of their actual names.
After specifying which item you want to spawn and the number of said item, you can then add p, e, i, to your command.
p – spawns the item into your inventory instead of on the ground
e – automatically equips the spawned item
i – spawns the item only if you don’t have one in your inventory
Nocost
Nocost is a toggle that allows you to craft or build anything without any cost. The command messes with your crafting menus and makes it so you can craft any item on any station. This can get annoying fast, so it’s advisable to toggle it off when not needed.
That’s not what you can normally craft at a Workbench
Goto
Goto is a command that lets you teleport anywhere in the world. All you need are the X and Z coordinates of your desired location. Separate the command and coordinates with a space.
To help you navigate, you can also use the pos command. It will tell you your exact current coordinates. Again, the ones determining where you are, are the X and Z coordinates. Ignore the Y.
And if you want to try and get in the general area of where you need to go without knowing the precise location, Valheim’s worlds tend to have most of their points of interest between -7000 and 7000 coordinates. The negative numbers represent the South and West edges of the map. And the positive ones will take you North and East.
Fly
Fly is a toggle that allows your character to fly. When this command is enabled, you’ll have expanded controls. Below are the default keys for flying in Valheim.
Space – go up
Ctrl – go down
Shift – boost flying speed
