When exploring the Ashlands biome, you may discover a Vegvisir stone pointing you to a Mysterious Location. Upon your arrival there, you’ll find a building you can’t immediately enter and an enemy spawner. This is actually a part of a quest to restore Dyrnwyn, a powerful ancient sword. The sword’s fire aura is not only great for the extra damage it offers, it can also act as a light source when you’re out exploring in the dark. This guide will help you locate the three Mysterious Locations, find the pieces of the broken sword, and restore Dyrnwyn to its full glory.
How to Find a Mysterious Location
This guide assumes you’re doing the quest in order. There’s a total of three Mysterious Locations in any given world and they follow a clear sequence. If you accidentally stumble on one of the later locations and follow the quest from there, start from the top here to figure out the parts you’ve skipped.
Mysterious Location #1
You will get your first clue about a Mysterious Location inside a Putrid Hole dungeon in the Ashlands. These are the small dark caves you’ll find scattered throughout the biome. You’ll be looking for a Vegvisir stone with glowing runes on it. Unlike most other Vegvisirs, this one won’t point you to a boss, and instead place a question mark on your map.

Not every Putrid Hole has a Vegvisir, only a quarter of them. Which means you’ll likely need to explore quite a few to find the clue. What they do all have in common is a Morgen monster that’ll pop out of the ground and attack you soon after you enter a Putrid Hole. So be ready for a fight when stepping inside.

The Mysterious Location markers will send you all over Ashlands. You’ll likely end up crossing most of the biome during this quest. When you approach the first marker, you’ll see a stone building with a purple Monument of Torment spawning powerful enemies around it. Destroy the monument with your weapon attacks and clear out the enemies before you proceed.
Mysterious Location #1Monument of Torment
You’ll then discover that there’s no obvious entrance to the structure marked on your map. This means you’ll need to make your own way in. Start hitting the walls with a pickaxe or even a regular weapon. If you see damage numbers, that means your attacks are working. After a while, the wall will crumble.
Inside you’ll find an altar with 4 Molten Cores and the Dyrnwyn Tip Fragment. You’ll also see a new Vegvisir stone. This one will add another question mark to your map. One taking you to the second Mysterious Location. Don’t forget to loot the sword fragment before leaving.

Mysterious Location #2
The second Mysterious Location will also have a Monument of Torment spawner, but it’s an open gazebo. Which means you don’t have to fight the enemies there. You can just run in, grab the Dyrnwyn Blade Fragment and the Molten Cores from the altar in the middle, use the Vegvisir by it to learn the location of the final Mysterious Location, and run away.

Mysterious Location #3
When you reach it, from a distance the third Mysterious Location will look exactly like the first. A blocked off structure and a Monument of Torment. Destroy the monument and clear out the enemies, then crack open a wall to get inside.
Mysterious Location #3
Only when you do get inside, the altar will be empty except for the Molten Cores. Behind the altar, you’ll see a dark tunnel leading underground. When you enter the tunnel, it will be revealed as the Tomb of Lord Reto.

The tomb is a dark cave and Lord Reto is a skeleton with a big blue sword inside it. You’ll need to defeat Lord Reto and loot the Dyrnwyn Hilt Fragment from him. This will be a fairly tough fight.
Lord RetoHilt Description
Lord Reto has a ton of health and hits like a truck. His attacks are well-telegraphed and slow, however. Which means you’ll ideally want to have plenty of stamina and be good at dodging when you fight him. Attack, then make sure you have enough time and stamina left to dodge Lord Reto’s counterattack. Alternatively, use magic or ranged weapons and kite him.
How to Craft Dyrnwyn
When you have all three pieces of Dyrnwyn, return to your base. You’ll need a Black Forge upgraded to at least level 4 to reforge the sword. To get there, you’ll need:
Black Forge (Black Marble x10, Yggdrasil Wood x10, Black Core x5)
Black Forge Cooler (Iron x5, Copper x5, Black Marble x4)
Vice (Iron x5, Copper x8, Mechanical Spring x2)
Metal Cutter (Black Marble x5, Flametal x5, Ashwood x5, Charred Bone x4)
This means you’ll need to upgrade your Black Forge with at least one Ashlands improvement. But you won’t need the Gem Cutter that can only be crafted after you’ve raided a Charred Fortress.
Grab the three Dyrnwyn pieces and interact with the Black Forge. The full recipe to restore the sword is as follows:
Dyrnwyn Hilt Fragment
Dyrnwyn Blade Fragment
Dyrnwyn Tip Fragment
Flametal x20
Bloodstone
The price in Flametal is steep. And the Bloodstone means you will need to clear a Charred Fortress to restore Dyrnwyn after all. But once you restore the sword, you’ll have a powerful weapon. Its fire damage enchantment will likely work well for you when you visit the next Deep North biome. And its fiery glow will act as a torch when you’re exploring the many dark places of Valheim.
