Valheim is an expansive open game with lots of resources, materials, and loot. Collecting and storing it all is a major part of the experience. But sometimes it gets too much and you need to get rid of some of your items. This is where this guide comes in. It will teach you how to destroy your unwanted items so that they don’t clutter your base and lower your performance.
Destroying Items
There are several ways to get rid of excess items in Valheim:
Using an Obliterator
Throwing items away to let them despawn
Using console commands
Obliterator Method
The best and most convenient method to destroy unwanted items is by using an Obliterator. You’ll be able to build one after reaching the Swamp biome. It will allow you to put items inside and destroy them instantly. It will even give you some Coal as a reward occasionally.
How to Craft an Obliterator
Building an Obliterator is not super straightforward. To craft one you’ll need:
Iron x8
Copper x4
Thunder Stone
Iron and Copper are basic resources you’ll be using to craft your weapons and armor. Copper Ore is mined from deposits in the Black Forest biome and Scrap Iron is mined inside the Swamp Dungeons. You’ll then use a Smelter to turn that ore into the bars you need for the Obliterator.

To get a Thunder Stone, you’ll need to locate Haldor the merchant in the Black Forest. We have a guide that will help you find Haldor. Once you do, he’ll sell you a Thunder Stone for 50 Coins.

When you have the ingredients, go to your base and build an Obliterator from the Crafting tab of the Hammer menu.
Crafting an Obliterator
You’ll need a nearby Forge to place your Obliterator. Ideally, you’ll want to place it away from other structures or chests. When you use an Obliterator, a lightning bolt strikes it. Its AoE effect can damage surrounding structures.
How to Use an Obliterator
Interact with the middle section

Pull the lever on the right side
To use an Obliterator, approach it and look at its middle section. You’ll get a prompt to Open it. Do it and place your unwanted items in the window that appears. Then, pull the lever on the right side to activate the Obliterator. This will destroy the items inside. And if you put enough junk in there, you’ll be rewarded with Coal.

Despawn Items
If you don’t want to use an Obliterator or don’t have access to it yet, you can use some alternative methods. These include tossing items on the ground away from your base, and dropping items in deep water to let them despawn naturally.
Dropping Items on the Ground
The simplest method of getting rid of your unwanted stuff is to just drop it on the ground. There are some rules for how to make this work:
You need to be at least 20 meters away from any structure you’ve built
It takes roughly 2 in-game days for items to despawn naturally
If these conditions are met, eventually the stuff you throw away will disappear and stop hogging your resources.
Dropping Items in the Ocean
If you don’t want to wait 2 days, you can speed up the process by throwing your items in deep waters. You’ll want a raft or a boat for that. Simply sail away from the shore. When you reach deep waters or the Ocean biome, throw your unwanted items in, and they’ll disappear.
Console Commands
If you’re not above using the developer console to get what you need, you can instantly remove all item drops in your vicinity.
Before you can use developer commands, you’ll need to enable the console.
In the Steam version, right-click Valheim, go to Properties and under Selected Launch Options add -console
In the Game Pass version, create a shortcut for Valheim, go into its Properties and add -console after the quotation marks of the Target field
After you do this, launch the game and hit F5
Type devcommands in the console that opens
Type removedrops to delete all the items on the ground
