Smoker is the Deep North-tier Cauldron improvement that allowes you to finally fully upgrade your Cauldron.

How to Craft

  • To craft a Smoker, you will need 5 Bloodgold and 6 Timberwood
  • Timberwood is harvested from the trees that grow in the Deep North biome and doesn’t require a specific tier of axe
  • To harvest Bloodgold from Gammeltrolls, you’ll need Ember Charges

Upon reaching the Deep North biome, you’ll be able to fully upgrade your Cauldron and start cooking the best food Valheim has to offer. On top of the new Smoker, you’ll also need all the earlier Cauldron improvements: Spice Rack, Butcher’s Table, Pots and Pans, Mortar and Pestle, and Rolling Pins and Cutting Boards.

  • Timberwood is harvested from the Timber Trees in the Deep North
  • Bloodgold is harvested from petrified Gammeltrolls with Ember Charges and then processed in a Blast Furnace

Timberwood is both plentiful and easy to acquire in the Deep North. The biome has plenty of Timber Trees everywhere, and you don’t even need a high-tier axe to chop them down.

How to Get Bloodgold

Bloodgold, on the other hand, is a really tricky ore. Its raw form is Petrified Tissue. It’s dropped by Gammeltrolls. These giant enemies are taller than trees, deal a lot of damage and toss tree trunks at you for a ranged attack.

If you manage to defeat one, it turns to stone. No pickaxe in the game can mine through it. You’ll need Ember Charges to do it. You craft them at a Workbench by combining 2 Seal Pelts with Embers. This gets you 10 Ember Charges.

Embers are periodically produced by Eternal Pyres. Seal Pelts are dropped by the Seals in the Deep North.

Toss an Ember Charge under each foot of a petrified Gammeltroll and you’ll get a couple of stacks of Petrified Tissue. It’s very heavy and can’t be moved through a regular Portal, so make sure to have a Stone Portal ready to transport the ore.

Once you get the tissue back to your base, toss it into a Blast Furnace (Stone x20, Surtling Core x5, Iron x10, Finewood x20) with some Coal, and you’ll start getting Bloodgold.

How to Place

  • Smoker needs to be placed close to a Cauldron
  • A Workbench needs to be nearby to place a Smoker
  • Despite its small size, a Smoker needs a decent amount of flat ground to be placed

When you have the resources to craft a Smoker, go up to your Cauldron and open the Hammer crafting menu. Go to the Crafting tab and find Smoker there. Don’t forget to place a Workbench nearby before starting.

While a Smoker is relatively compact, it can be tricky to place as it needs to both be close enough to your Cauldron, which already has all the other improvements cluttering the area, and it needs some flat ground to stand on. If at first you can’t place your Smoker, try moving around to find a good spot.

When your Smoker is in place, the star in the upper right corner of the Cauldron cooking menu will show a higher number. If you’ve been building all the previous Cauldron improvements, at this point it should be showing a 7. You’ll also get a notification on your screen when the Cauldron level goes up.

Helpful Tips

  • Every Cauldron improvement raises your Cauldron level by one. And even though you’re supposed to build them as you progress through the biomes, the order in which you place them doesn’t actually matter
  • After upgrading your Cauldron, you will still need to find the ingredients for the new recipes before they show up in your cooking menu
  • When placing your Smoker, you can rotate it with the mouse wheel to find a better spot
