Fallout: London Reception – Breaking Records, Posting Updates, and Launching A New Studio

Fallout: London has been out for just over two weeks, and it had quite the reception. In case you’re not in the know, Fallout: London is a fan-made conversion mod for Fallout 4 that is essentially a free DLC-sized expansion. If you’re rushing off to download it, beware that it will completely take over your file for Fallout 4.

In its short life with the public, it has become the fastest redeemed game on GOG, with over 500,000 people downloading it. There are likely several compounding reasons for this. One is that they had a great launch trailer that really created a lot of hype around the release.

Another possible reason adding to its success is the fact that there’s currently a sale on Fallout 4 (which is needed to play the mod). The sale really is a good deal, and there have already been more players in the franchise’s games following the TV show releasing this year. They really couldn’t have picked a better time to release a popular fan-made mod.

Although, it hasn’t all been sunshine and rainbows; many players have reported bugs with the mod. Currently, the most helpful review on GOG says that their game keeps crashing. The developers acted swiftly, though, releasing small patches for minor problems, and very recently releasing a larger update that fixes many larger issues (there are some steps to activate the update).

It’s impressive that they’ve had the time to continue working on the mod, since they’ve also been busy with interviews. Perhaps not the usual venue for game developer interviews, to put it lightly, but the BBC News had them on air talking about the mod and their plans for the future. The developers, Team FOLON, let the host know that they’re going to open their own indie development studio and make original games (that aren’t mods of other games).

Team FOLON isn’t getting paid for the mod, but they did mention that some of their fans are donating, which is allowing them to start up this new studio. This will surely go down as one of the biggest success stories of any modding team, and we can’t wait to see what they work on next.

Lol, totally. It’s not like over 1 million people ever downloaded a Skyrim mod, or that a mod for Half-Life ended up being one of the most popular FPS of all time or anything.
