Well, we’ve come full circle. A game that started out inspired by — and later licensed characters from — horror movies is getting its own horror movie. Dead by Daylight developer Behaviour Interactive has announced today that they’re working with production companies Atomic Monster (The Conjuring, Malignant) and Blumhouse (Insidious, The Purge) to bring the Realm of the Entity to the big screen.
Both companies have experience with horror films, and Blumhouse is currently working on an untitled FNAF movie as well. The team up makes sense, and there’s no question that some of DBD’s original Killers would be terrifying to see done up in big budget special effects. The official announcement included quotes from the BHVR vice president, as well as the founder and CEO of Atomic Monster:
We couldn’t be more thrilled to work with Jason Blum and James Wan, two giants of the horror film industry, to further expand the Dead by Daylight universe… Atomic Monster and Blumhouse are the ideal partners to craft Dead by Daylight’s killer entrance onto the big screen.
Stephen Mulrooney, Executive Vice President at Behaviour Interactive
In Dead by Daylight the Behaviour team has created a love letter to the world of horror, building an incredible environment teeming with atmosphere and terrifying villains – perfect for a scary cinematic adaptation… We’re big fans of the game at Atomic Monster, and are thrilled to be teaming up with Blumhouse to bring this frighteningly visceral world to the big screen.
James Wan, Atomic Monster Founder and CEO
They have not found a director or a screenwriter yet, so it’s clear that the project is still in very early stages. No hints were given on what we can expect in terms of story or characters, but it seems a safe bet that the film will feature original characters from the game, both in terms of Survivors and Killers.
In the game’s lore, the Entity makes use of numerous monsters, corrupted humans, and other spooky beings to torture the humans it has drawn into its Realm. Both the Killers and the Survivors all have back stories that relate how they ended up in the Entity’s Realm; it will be interesting to see if the movie focuses on one or two characters and their individual stories, or if it will be more of an ensemble film, with most of the action taking place in the Entity’s Realm.
Is there a character you’re hoping gets a lot of screen time in the DBD film? Anyone you’d rather was left out? Let us know in the comments!
