Chicken Farm – Valheim

After exploring the Plains biome, you’ll be able to get your hands on some Eggs. You will then be able to hatch these Eggs into chickens, grow those chickens into hens, and finally breed those hens to give you easy access to Eggs, Feathers, and Chicken Meat. This guide will help you set up your own chicken and egg farm.

  • Buy Eggs from Haldor for 1500 Coins each after defeating Yagluth
  • Find 2 Eggs in the Sealed Tower dungeon

It’s actually really easy to miss the existence of Eggs in Valheim. You unlock access to them late in the Plains biome. And you get them from either an early-game trader or from inside a missable side area in an optional Plains dungeon.

Haldor is likely the first NPC trader you’ll find in Valheim. As you’re exploring the Black Forest biome, at some point a white bag icon will appear on your map. This is how you’ll know Haldor is near. Our detailed guide for how to find Haldor will help you locate him with ease. Haldor sells a number of useful items, like the Megingjord belt that greatly increases your carrying capacity. Because of that, you’ll want to buy his items as soon as possible and then won’t have much reason to visit him again.

However, after you defeat the Plains boss Yagluth, Haldor expands his stock, letting you buy Eggs from him. One Egg costs 1500 Coins, and to get a chicken farm going, you’ll want at least two of them. This means you’ll want to save up at least 3000 Coins when going to buy some Eggs. You get Coins as drops from certain monsters and find them inside chests. You can also sell various valuable gems to traders to get more Coins.

If you don’t want to pay Haldor’s outrageous price for Eggs, you can instead find a couple of them inside the Sealed Tower dungeon. To get there, you will likely need to interact with another NPC Trader – Hildir. Finding Hildir can be a bit harder than Haldor. She spawns in the Meadows biome, but it has to be far-enough away from your starting location. And as you generally have no reason to revisit the Meadows after you’re done with that starting biome, you will need to purposefully sail around to find Hildir. When you’re near her, a white shirt icon will appear on your map. Consult our how to find Hildir guide if you need some additional pointers.

When you find Hildir, interact with Hildir’s Map Table. This will update your world map with the locations of Hildir’s quest dungeons. One of these dungeons is the Sealed Tower located in the Plains biome. We have a detailed guide for how to prepare for and tackle Hildir’s quests.

In short, once you reach a Sealed Tower, you’ll realize there’s no way in on the ground floor. You will need to build some platforms and jump on them to get inside. Once in, you’ll have to fight through a bunch of Fulings. As you do, keep hitting the metal grates to unlock a path to the tower’s basement.

In the basement, you’ll face the boss duo of Zil and Thungr. If you end up defeating them, make sure to grab the Bronze Chest for Hildir’s quest while you’re there. But if you’re just there for the eggs, you can try to run past the bosses into the small treasure room behind them. There, you’ll see two chests. Each of them has an Egg inside. Grab those Eggs and get out.

  • Put an Egg close to a fire source and wait 30 minutes for chickens to hatch
  • Wait about 50 minutes for chickens to grow into hens
  • Feed hens with Dandelions, Barley, or seeds to make them happy
  • Two happy hens in close proximity will periodically spawn Eggs

When you’ve got the Eggs, it’s time to hatch them. To do so, all you need is drop the Eggs on the ground near a fire source. The process can be a bit finnicky. Dropping items isn’t too precise, and you don’t want your pricey Eggs to fall through the ground or drop too far away from the fire. If you do it right, once you look at an Egg it should say “Warm.” If it falls too far from the fire, it will say “Too cold” instead. If that happens, pick the Egg up and drop it again. Keep in mind that you need to be dropping individual eggs, not stacks of them.

After spending 30 minutes by a fire, your Eggs will hatch into chickens. Technically, you can harvest resources from chickens but that’s a waste of good Eggs. Instead, you should leave them in a safe spot for about 50 minutes to let them grow into hens. Chickens and Hens tend to run around all over the place, so it’s a good idea to put them inside a chicken coop. Basically, just any sort of fence around them will do. This will prevent your chickens from running away and getting eaten by monsters.

Once you have some hens, you need to feed them to make them happy. To do so, just throw some food on the ground in front of your hens. Hens can eat the following:

  • Carrot Seeds
  • Turnip Seeds
  • Onion Seeds
  • Beech Seeds
  • Birch Seeds
  • Dandelion
  • Barley

Once they eat, your hens will go from hungry to happy. When you have two or more happy hens close, they’ll start laying Eggs. You can then hatch those Eggs to get more hens. When you have enough, you can start using the Eggs and the meat you get from your excess hens for various recipes.

And if that sounds like way too much work, you can also create an automated AFK egg farm.

When you have a steady supply of Eggs and hens, you can start using them. Surprisingly, for how hard it is to get Eggs in the first place, and all you need to do to breed chickens, the recipes that use them can be a bit disappointing.

Eggs can be used in recipes directly. Hens need to be butchered first. You can use your regular weapons for that, but you’ll risk damaging your buildings. Instead, you should use the special Butcher Knife that slays tame animals in one hit without damaging anything else. When slain, hens drop Chicken Meat and Feathers.
