Valheim – Deep North Mysteries and Pet Rocks

This month’s developer update for Valheim shares another video entry in Hervor Bloodtooth’s journey to the frozen Deep North biome. On top of bringing closer the eventual release of the Deep North update that will mark the game’s graduation to a full release, the brief video showcases some of the upcoming biome’s environments and a seemingly abandoned structure that may or may not be a place of Viking worship.

The overall tone of this update suggests that unlike the earlier biome updates that threw increasingly overwhelming challenges at the players, the Deep North biome might have a more desolate feel to it. In it, ominous things will lurk in the corner of your eye instead of assaulting you with fireballs and blood-sucking ticks the moment you set foot there. See for yourself:

The update also shares a clearer look at the structure we could glimpse at the end of the video. It resembles a Nordic temple. Maybe one to Thor or Odin. Or, it also may be a tavern of some sort. Or maybe both or neither of those things. As we all know, Odin was never one of the more straightforward deities. All we know for sure is that this structure will be important in some way.

While this update doesn’t give us something like a release date for the upcoming launch, it does share some other news. First, we get to check out the winners of the screenshot contest announced a couple months back. The winners can now count themselves among the proud owners of official Neck plushies. Here are the winning entries:

Finally, we’re treated to a surprising twist. Earlier this month, commemorating April Fool’s day, the game received a small update with humorous patch notes and a series of clearly fake infomercials. As it turned out, one of those bits was actually true. Following that earlier update, you can now have your own Pet Rock in and outside of Valheim.

You will initially find it as a stone named Rock – a clear nod to the beloved Deep Rock Galactic game – somewhere in the world at least 1000 meters away from your initial starting spot. When you pick it up, it will turn into a Mysterious Rock in your inventory. You will then be able to place it in the world through the Misc. tab of the Hammer crafting menu by combining it with a piece of Coal. Having done that, you’ll be able to rename and pet your new smiley-faced friend. Not just friendly but also helpful, you will also be able to use it as an Item Stand. For Karl!

And if that alone wasn’t enough, we’re also directed to the official, limited-time Makeship campaign where you can chip in $29.99 through May 10, 2025, and then get your hands on a cheerful Pet Rock plushie that’s being used as an item stand for a Viking mug. It’s exactly as adorable as it sounds.
