There are currently 12 different types of fish in Valheim. You generally can find a couple types of fish in each biome. Some of them will spawn close to the shore, others in deeper waters. And certain types of fish only spawn in very specific places, like the Tetra that only appears in the pools you’ll occasionally find in the Frost Caves dungeons. This guide will help you locate and catch the right type of fish.

How to Find Specific Fish
Perch
Perch is a basic fish you’ll find in the waters of the Meadows, Black Forest and Plains biomes. It’s very common, striped with a red tail, and requires the basic Fishing Bait to catch. Its internal item ID is Fish1. On top of the regular fish uses, you’ll need it to craft a Draught of Vananidir.
Pike
Pike is a basic fish found in off the shore of the Meadows, Black Forest and Plains biomes. It’s less common than Perch, is long and green in color, but it still only needs the basic Fishing Bait to catch. Its internal item ID is Fish2.
Tuna
Tuna is a fish you can find deep in the Ocean biome with an internal item ID Fish3. It’s blue, swims very fast, and requires Heavy Fishing Bait to catch.
Tetra
Tetra is a pretty unique fish. You can only find it inside the small pools in the Frost Caves dungeons of the Mountain biome. Its internal item ID is Fish4_cave and you’ll need the Cold Fishing Bait to catch it.
Trollfish
Trollfish is a fish native to the Black Forest biome. You’ll find it swimming in the waters of that biome and will need some Mossy Fishing Bait to catch it. It’s deep blue in color and large in size. Its internal item ID is Fish5. Trollfish is a crucial ingredient in the Mead of Troll Endurance.
Giant Herring
Giant Herring is a fast-swimming fish found off the shores of the Swamp biome. You’ll need Sticky Fishing Bait to catch it. Its internal item ID is Fish6.
Grouper
Grouper is a pinkish spotted fish found in the waters of the Plains biome. It’s caught using the Stingy Fishing Bait. Its internal item ID is Fish7. You will mainly need it to craft the Anti-Sting Concoction Mead.
Coral Cod
Coral Cod is similar to Tuna in that it’s only reachable by boat in the Ocean biome. You’ll recognize it by its rich red color. Its internal item ID is Fish8. Just like with Tuna, you will need some Heavy Fishing Bait to catch it.
Anglerfish
Anglerfish is a black fish with a lantern on its head. It can be found in the dark waters of the Mistlands biome. Due to all the mist, it can be tricky to spot, but when you do find an Anglerfish, you’ll need some Misty Fishing Bait to catch it. Its internal item ID is Fish9. It’s used to cook Fish ‘n’ Bread, a great Mistlands-tier stamina-boosting food.
Northern Salmon
Northern Salmon is a large fish found in the waters of the chilly Deep North biome. Its internal item ID is Fish10. If you’re looking to catch some Northern Salmon, you’ll need to use the Frosty Fishing Bait.
Magmafish
Magmafish is a fish native to the boiling waters of the Ashlands biome. You’ll need a Drakkar ship to navigate those waters. Even with the ship, it can be hard to spot Magmafish so if you don’t find it right away, keep sailing. When you do find some Magmafish, you will need Hot Fishing Bait to catch it. Its internal item ID is Fish11.
Pufferfish
Pufferfish is a fish mainly found in the waters of the Mistlands biome. However, you’ll also occasionally find it deep in the Ocean biome as well. Wherever it is, you’ll need Misty Fishing Bait to catch it. Be careful when catching it, as touching Pufferfish outside of your inventory will poison you. Its internal item ID is Fish12.
