Farming Tools – Valheim

When starting a farm, digging in the dirt only gets you so far. If you want to become a proper Valheim farmer, you’ll want to use tools. Since ours isn’t a game that’s all about farming, the list of available farming tools is fairly modest. Still, this guide will tell you all about Valheims’ farming tools and why you want to use them.

  • You will need to combine 5 Corewood and 5 Bronze at a Forge to craft a Cultivator
  • Pine trees drop Corewood when chopped down
  • Bronze is created at a Forge by combining 1 Tin and 2 Copper bars
  • Both Tin and Copper are mined in the Black Forest

The Cultivator is your primary farming tool. It lets you prepare the soil for farming and plant crops in it. Outside of farming, the Cultivator also lets you create grass and replant trees. Keep in mind that when you’re planting trees to get easy access to different types of lumber, you don’t need to cultivate soil.

To get some Corewood, you’ll need to venture into the Black Forest and chop down some Pines. While you’re there, don’t forget your pickaxe for those Tin and Copper deposits. Tin can be found near water, while Copper is located deeper in the forest. Back at your base, you’ll need to smelt those ores into bars at a Smelter (Stone x20, Surtling Core x5) then combine them into Bronze at a Forge (Stone x4, Coal x4, Wood x10, Copper x6). Still at the Forge, combine 5 Bronze with 5 Corewood and you’ll get a Cultivator.

As you use it, your Cultivator will lose durability. Since repairing it is free, this shouldn’t be much of an issue. You can, however, upgrade it at a Forge. Upgrading a Cultivator doesn’t change its functionality. It simply increases its durability, so it may not be the best use of your limited resources. Especially since as your Farming skill goes up, your Cultivator will start losing its durability at a slower rate.

  • You will need to combine 6 Silver with a Scythe Handle at a level 2 Forge to craft a Scythe
  • Silver is mined from Silver Veins in the Mountain biome
  • The Bog Witch in the Swamp sells Scythe Handles for 200 Coins

When you’re playing alone or in a small group, you can get away with a tiny farm. But once your group grows to a certain size, picking crops by hand might become annoying. The Scythe will help you there. In a single swing it can harvest a lot of crops. As you do that, your Farming skill experience will grow. And as it grows, the area of effect of your Scythe will increase as well, allowing you to become a master farmer.

You’ll be able to craft a Scythe after progressing past the Mountain biome. First off, you’ll need to mine some Silver in the Mountains. For that, you will need to equip the Wishbone item dropped by the Swamp boss – the Bonemass. As you explore the Mountain biome, your Wishbone will blink. The closer you are to a Silver Vein, the faster it will blink. When it blinks really fast, start hitting the ground with a pickaxe and soon enough you’ll uncover a Silver Vein. Mine it, then process the ore at a Smelter.

You’ll also need a Scythe Handle. You can buy one from the Bog Witch trader for 200 Coins. You’ll find her as you explore the Swamp biome. When you’re nearing the Bog Witch hut, you’ll see a white cauldron on your map. Our guide for how to find the Bog Witch will help you locate the witch. When you do, interact with her to open her shop and buy the Scythe Handle. The witch only starts selling Scythe Handles after you’ve defeated Moder – the boss of the Mountain biome.

Combine 6 Silver and a Scythe Handle at a level 2 Forge and you’ll get your Scythe. As you use it, it will lose durability. Just like with the Cultivator, you can upgrade the Scythe to make it more durable. But since repairs are free, this shouldn’t be your priority.
