Farming Skill & How to Increase It – Valheim

Valheim is a game with RPG elements, and as such, skills govern many of your actions here. This includes growing and harvesting crops thanks to the Farming skill. This guide will tell you what the Farming skill does in Valheim and how you can level it up.

  • Decreases farming stamina use
  • Decreases Cultivator durability wear
  • Increases Scythe harvest radius
  • Increases the chance of bonus yields

As you engage in any farming-related activity, be it cultivating soil, planting crops, harvesting crops, or swinging a Scythe, you use stamina. As your Farming skill goes up, the stamina usage for these activities goes down.

You’ll be using the Cultivator tool a lot when farming. As you do, it loses its durability, forcing you to eventually go to a Forge to repair the tool. This can be mitigated by upgrading the Cultivator. But also, by increasing your Farming skill.

Once your farm gets big enough, manually harvesting crops becomes tedious. At that point, you’ll want to use a Scythe to speed up the process. Leveling up your Farming skill will greatly increase the Scythe’s harvesting range, allowing you to harvest entire fields in just a few swings.

The previous effects offer some welcome quality-of-life improvements. However, the main benefit of increasing the Farming skill are the bonus yields you get. Whenever you harvest a crop, the Farming skill gives you a chance to receive an extra item. This works both when you’re manually harvesting crops and when you’re using a Scythe.

What’s even more important, the bonus yields provided by the Farming skills also work on crops you can’t farm. Things like wild berries and mushrooms you find while exploring the world. Since you can’t farm these resources and their natural respawn timer is set at 4-5 real time hours, getting an extra yield when gathering mushrooms and other wild crops is very welcome. This, above everything else, is why you want to level up your Farming skill

  • Use a Cultivator to plant crops and cultivate soil
  • Manually harvest crops
  • Use a Scythe to harvest crops
  • Wear the Harvester set

The Cultivator is your primary farming tool. Using it increases your Farming skill. And this means any Cultivator action. The skill goes up when you use the Cultivator to plant seeds and crops, when you use it to cultivate soil, and even when you use it to regrow grass.

Your Farming skill goes up whenever you manually harvest crops. To do so, simply walk up to a plant and press the interact button when looking at it. This works with the crops you’ve planted yourself, as well as wild berries and mushrooms you can’t plant.

After you progress past the Mountain biome, you’ll be able to craft a Scythe to help harvest your crops. Using the Scythe to harvest crops raises your Farming skill. Just keep in mind that for some reason you can’t use the Scythe to harvest farmable mushrooms like Jotun Puffs and Magecap.

The Harvester set is a set of non-combat farming clothes that lowers your base stamina usage and raises your Farming skill by 25 points. It consists of the Straw Hat and either a Harvest Dress or Harvest Tunic. All pieces of the Harvester set are sold by Hildir the trader after you bring her the Brass Chest. Our guide to completing Hildir’s quests will help you do just that.
