When you want to go out fishing in Valheim, you’ll need your trusty Fishing Rod and some bait. Seeing how fish is very picky about which type of bait it prefers, this guide will help you obtain and use the right bait for the fish you’re looking to catch.
How to Get Bait
There are multiple different types of bait in Valhiem, but they all start in the same place. Haldor’s shop in the Black Forest. As you explore the map, and in particular the Black Forest biome, you will at some point notice a white bag symbol on your map. Approaching it will bring you to Haldor, one of the game’s NPC traders. Check out our guide on finding Haldor for detailed directions.
When you reach Haldor, interact with him to open his store. He’ll be selling Fishing Bait among other things. You’ll be able to purchase 20 basic Fishing Bait for 10 Coins each. These coins are dropped by certain monsters and can occasionally be found inside chests. You can also sell gems and other valuables to traders to get more Coins.
This basic Fishing Bait will let you catch Perch and Pike. If you want to catch some of the more advanced and elusive fish types, you’ll need to craft advanced bait. To do so, head to a Food Preparation Table and combine your basic Fishing Bait with specific enemy trophies to create new types of bait.

How to Equip Bait
If you’re looking to catch a specific type of fish and you only bring one type of bait, you don’t actually need to equip it. Simply equip your Fishing Rod and start fishing. The bait you have in your inventory will equip automatically. If you bring multiple types of bait and use a Fishing Rod, the bait closest to the topmost left square of your inventory will get auto-equipped.
If this is the wrong type of bait for the fish you’re looking to catch, you’ll see a message on your screen telling you that the fish isn’t taking your bait. In that case, you can go into your inventory and right-click the bait you want to use in order to manually equip it.
