Turnips are a Swamp-tier farmable crop. They’re an ingredient in a number of cooking and crafting recipes and can be used to tame boars.
Acquisition
You will need Turnip Seeds to grow Turnips
Turnip Seeds are gathered from wild Turnips that grow in the Swamp biome
Turnips take about 2-3 in-game days to grow
Once you start exploring the Swamp biome, sooner or later you’ll run into the wild Turnip plants. You’ll recognize them by their bright yellow flowers. It can be tricky to spot them in the dark Swamp biome, so having a light source with you when out searching for wild Turnips is a good idea.
Harvesting those wild Turnips will get you some Turnip Seeds. You will then be able to plant those seeds using the Cultivator tool to grow some actual Turnips. When you do, make sure to save some of your crops to replant them as Seed-turnips in order to keep your farm going. Check out our farming guide for some more general farming tips.

How to Farm
Turnips can grow in the following biomes:
Meadows
Black Forest
Swamp
Plains
Mistlands
Ashlands (Shield Generator required)
Turnips are very similar to Carrots. Only you find them growing in the Swamp, and their wild flowers are yellow instead of white. Other than that, they work exactly the same. You use a Cultivator to plant Turnip Seeds that grow into Turnips. Then, you plant those Turnips back as Seed Turnips to get more Turnip Seeds. You get 3 Turnip Seeds from a single Seed-turnip.

Cooking & Crafting
Unlike some other crops, you can’t eat raw Turnips. But when cooked in a Cauldron, they turn into a number of very useful food items. Some of those stay relevant even through the later biomes. You’ll also need some Turnips to upgrade your Cauldron, and can even use them during a seasonal event. The Recipes section below lists all the applications.
Farming
As we’ve mentioned earlier, you’ll be using some of your Turnips to grow Seed-turnips with the Cultivator. This will give you access to more Turnip Seeds, allowing you to turn 1 Turnip into 3 Turnip Seeds. This will save you from having to run around the Swamp every time you need some Turnips.
Taming
When you’re looking to tame some boars, whether because you want a pet or need easy access to their meat and Leather Scraps, you can use Turnips to feed the beasts.
In order to tame a boar, start by creating a pen, preferably surrounded by a Roundpole Fence, in a safe location. Find some boars nearby and when they spot you, lead them to the pen. Trap them inside by either closing the pen’s gate or placing the final piece of the fence, then move away so that the boars lose aggro (the red exclamation mark above them disappears).
The next part is a bit tricky. You need to approach the boars so that they notice you (a yellow dot appears above them), but don’t yet become aggressive. When they’re in this state, throw a Turnip inside the pen. The boars will eat the Turnip and you’ll see yellow hearts above them. This means they’re in the process of being tamed. In this state, boars can still attack you, so move away from them, but not too far. For the taming process to work, you need to be in the vicinity of the pen and the boars must not be attacking you. It takes 30 minutes to tame a boar. If done right, you’ll need a total of 3 Turnips to tame a boar. You can also use the Brew of Animal Whispers to double the taming speed.
Once tamed, you can start breeding and farming your boars, provided you have at least two of them.
