Flax is a Plains-tier farmable crop. It’s the key ingredient in Linen Thread used in crafting Plains weapons and a wide array of lighter high-tier armor.

Acquisition

  • Flax appears inside Fuling villages in the Plains
  • Flax is similar to Barley but is the rarer crop of the two
  • Flax can be grown in the cultivated soil of the Plains biome
  • Flax takes 2-3 in-game days to grow, with 1 Flax turning into 2 Flax after it’s harvested

As you run around the Plains biome, dodging Deathsquitos and fighting Fulings, you’ll occasionally stumble onto Fuling villages. Some of these villages have cultivated plots of lands in them. Either Flax or Barley can grow there. Flax is the rarer of the two crops, so after you do find some, make sure to gather it and save it for future planting.

How to Farm

Flax can grow in the following biomes:

  • Plains

Unlike most other crops, you don’t use Flax for eating. Instead, you use it to craft weapons and armor. When you’re tackling the Plains biome, you’ll need Flax, or rather the Linen Thread it turns into, for pretty much everything. It remains relevant for the later biomes if you want to craft some of the lighter armors they offer.

Similar to Barley, you find Flax Fuling villages in the Plains. You harvest it there and then transplant it to your own Plains farm. Planting a single piece of Flax with a Cultivator produces 2 Flax after it’s done growing. As Flax is rarer than Barley, make sure your Plains farm is protected well from the biome’s monsters.

Uses

  • Ingredient in crafting recipes
  • Plant to produce more Flax
  • Taming Lox

Crafting

Raw Flax is primarily used to produce Linen Thread. You’ll need a Spinning Wheel (Finewood x20, Iron Nails x10, Leather Scraps x5) to do so. You can also combine it with some Barley to make a cozy rug. Check out the Recipes section for more on that.

Farming

The Linen Thread you get from Flax is used in most of Plains-tier weapons and armor. It remains relevant in the later biomes as an ingredient in their lighter armor sets. Because of that, you’ll want to make sure to farm a lot of Flax.

Taming

You can use raw Flax to feed it to the Lox beasts in the Plains.

Taming a Lox can be a bit tricky. The large beasts will easily break through most walls and can pose quite a challenge. While there are some ways to still trap a Lox herd, they’re hard to pull off right and require a lot of preparation.

Instead, you should simply grab some Flax, sneak up on a Lox herd, and scatter the berries around. Once they notice you (a yellow dot appears over them), they’ll eat the food and the taming process will start. You’ll need to feed the Lox once every 10 minutes, resulting in a total of 3 Flax needed for the task. If you get too close during this and they become aggressive (a red exclamation mark appears), you should run away and let them calm down.

Once a Lox is being tamed, you need to remain within 64 meters from the beast without drawing its aggro for 30 minutes. If you drink a Brew of Animal Whispers, this time will become 15 minutes. As this is taking place, you’ll probably get attacked by the other denizens of the Plains. Drinking an Anti-Sting Concoction will protect you from the Deathsquitos.

When a Lox is tamed, you’ll be able to ride them into safety using a Lox Saddle (Leather Scraps x10, Linen Thread x20, Black Metal x15), and then start breeding them for their resources.

Helpful Tips

  • With the relative rarity of natural Flax spawns, make sure your Plains farm is well-protected
  • Each planted Flax turns into 2 Flax after it’s grown and harvested, so you’ll want to make sure to save up at least half of your harvests for replanting
