The Cultivator is a tool that lets you cultivate soil for planting seeds, restore grass and other vegetation, plant crops and trees. Its main use is planting farmable crops. But it’s also used to replant trees to save you from having to go far from your base for lumber, and to create grass for aesthetic purposes.
How to Craft
To craft a Cultivator, you’ll need 5 Corewood and 5 Bronze, as well as a Forge
Bronze is created at a Forge by combining 2 Copper and 1 Tin bars.
You’ll be able to craft a Cultivator once you reach the Black Forest biome. When you get there, look for the following:
Corewood is harvested from the Pine trees that grow in the Black Forest
Copper is mined from the green Copper deposits in the Black Forest
Tin is found in small silvery veins on the shores of the Black Forest
Pine trees are abundant in the Black Forest. You’ll recognize them by their long thin trunks. Chop them down with an axe to get your hands on some Corewood.
Copper and Tin are required to make Bronze. Both can be found in the Black Forest. Tin is located near the biome’s shores and looks silvery in color. Copper is found more inland. Copper deposits look like large green rocks. You’ll need a pickaxe to mine these ores. Once you mine some, you’ll need to smelt them into bars at a Smelter (Stone x20, Surtling Core x5) that turns Coal and raw ores into workable metal bars.

Once you’ve gathered 5 Corewood, 10 Copper and 5 Tin, go to a Forge (Stone x4, Coal x4, Wood x10, Copper x6). In the Forge crafting menu, find Bronze and create 5 bars. Then, in the same menu find the Cultivator tool and create it by combining 5 Corewood and 5 Bronze.

How to Upgrade
The Cultivator has a total of 3 quality levels. Starting from quality level 1, a Cultivator can plant everything and has its full functionality. The only thing that changes between its quality levels is its durability. A Cultivator loses 1 durability for every action (indicated by the white line appearing under its icon in your inventory). If you plan to use it a lot without going back to a Forge for repairs, you might want to upgrade your Cultivator.

To actually upgrade your Cultivator, you’ll need to first upgrade your Forge. You’ll need at least 2 Forge upgrades to fully upgrade your Cultivator. When you have a level 3 Forge, 3 Corewood and 3 Bronze, interact with the Forge then go to the Upgrade tab in its crafting menu. Select your Cultivator and hit the big Upgrade button. Do it twice to fully upgrade your Cultivator.

How to Use
Equip the Cultivator, then hit the right mouse button to open its menu
Select the Cultivator task
Aim at the ground and click the left mouse button to perform that task
Using a Cultivator is simple. Assign it to your hotbar, then hit the associated button to equip it. Then, hit the right mouse button to open the Cultivator menu. Depending on what crops and trees you’ve encountered that menu will have a varying number of items, but the first two will always be available. At any time, you can use your Cultivator to Cultivate or restore Grass.
If you’re looking to do some farming, crops require cultivated soil. To prepare a farm for planting, select the Cultivate task and click your cursor over the desired plot of land. If instead you want to restore your grassy lawn, select the Grass task and do the same. Keep in mind, the Grass task also helps you restore destroyed vegetation around the shore, like the lily pads growing in the water.

Once you’ve unlocked planting options by finding various crops and seeds in the world, you’ll need to Cultivate the soil, then open the Cultivator menu again, select the desired crop, then plant it in the soil. You’ll need to make sure not to overcrowd your farm. After you plant some seeds, you can unequip the Cultivator and examine your crops. If you’ve done everything right, they’ll have a (Healthy) status. And if not, your crops will wilt and you’ll get an error status for what went wrong.

Unlike crops, if you get access to some tree saplings, you can just plant them in the grass. You don’t need to Cultivate the soil first.

Helpful Tips
Since the only thing that goes up with Cultivator levels is its durability, you don’t need to rush upgrading it
Individual crops have biome preferences, like how Barley can only grow in the Plains, so consider that when planning your farms
Ashvine grown from Vineberry Seeds needs to be planted close to a wall to properly grow
Using a Cultivator consumes stamina, so when you’re looking to do some farming, eating stamina-boosting foods or wearing stamina-boosting clothes is a good idea
