Blasphemous 2 Coming This Summer

During yesterday’s Nintendo’s Indie World Showcase, the sequel to the award-winning metroidvania Blasphemous was announced — and we couldn’t be more excited. The original managed to stand out in a crowded genre, thanks to excellent platforming, combat, and due to its unique art style and setting. Drawing upon Catholic gothic imagery — specifically that of the Spanish city of Seville — Blasphemous was captivatingly grotesque, and its story rivals the best FromSoft game in its inscrutability (and features dense, convoluted lore told via item descriptions).

Set after the events of the original game’s Wounds of Eventide update, the sequel features the return of The Miracle, and you’ll once again confront this supernatural entity’s twisted creations as the ever-silent Penitent One. While much of the gameplay looks like it’ll remain the same, the sequel adds three new weapons (a stark departure from the original’s single sword), and the trailer shows off a number of new and interesting platforming challenges as well. Naturally, the strange and terrifying bosses and NPCs of the original are back as well — and so are the cherubs!

Blasphemous 2 will release Summer 2023 for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. In the meantime, anyone interested in metroidvanias who hasn’t already played the original should go check it out now. Not only is it one of the best metroidvanias in recent memory, doing so will let you at least pretend to understand the sequel’s plot.
