As a fan of the “My Hero Academia” series myself, I always wanted them to release a game for it. Well, Bandai Namco Entertainment was kind enough to make our dreams come through by publishing My Hero Academia Smash Tap on 29 May 2017. This is a free-to-play game on mobile platforms.
On 14 July 2018, My Hero Academia Smash Tap received a major game update. The game update was large enough that the new version of it was renamed as “My Hero Academia Smash Rising”.
At present, Smash Rising only has Japanese servers and the global server’s release date is still not yet to be confirmed. Anyway, it is fun to play, and for me the language doesn’t really become an issue.
Without further ado, I’m going to walk you through this game and provide some insights that might help you out. The game has 42 characters for the roster itself and most of those are heroes. Most of the characters from the series are included except for Best Jeanist, Inasa Yoarashi, Black Hole and a few others.
Home Screen
The home screen of the game shows your player level (1 rank), name (Saber), exp indicator for the next level (reddish orange bar) and Stamina (bluish green bar) in the top left corner.
Underneath the bars, it shows the games two forms of currency (Gold Coins and Hero Souls). The three icons after that are the news icon on the left (news, updates , maintenance), present icon in the middle (daily or event rewards), pencil on board icon on the right (missions).
Deck
The deck icon is the place where you build your team. There are a maximum of 5 team slots. Each team has the maximum capacity of 3 team members, and each team member can hold until 3 cards (ultimate skills of the character or buff cards).
There are five different categories for the characters and cards which are strength (red), skill (green), speed (blue), neutral (yellow) and universal (purple). Character’s can switch to a different category but the cards are fixed. Different categories have different buffs and passive.
Level Up System
For the level system, each character and cards range from 1 star to a maximum of 6 stars. The 42 characters can be obtained for free but you need to take some time training them to the full 6 stars. 1 badge for the specific characters is needed in order to unlock the character in the first place. The second selection bar from the deck icon is the place to rank up and obtain character,
Then you need 3 badges to rank up the character to 2 stars, to 3 stars is 10 badges, 4 stars is 30 badges, 5 stars is 100 badges and 6 stars is 300 badges.
Quest/ Mission
The Patrol icon is the place for you to go for an adventure. There is the story mode, Crisis, Daily Quest (where to go for badges, elements to level up and rank up card and earn gold coins) and any special events.
The Help icon is the place in the city where the citizen and police require help from your heroes. Some are critical missions that need you to take immediate action just like some scenes in the anime.
Shop/ Gasha (Summon)
In the Shop you can cash in is most of the game’s items, while the Gasha icon is the place for you to summon cards and badges by using hero souls and hero tickets.
Gameplay
There two ways of playing this game in match, which is choosing either using auto mode or semi-auto mode. Play-style of the game is similar to Dragalia Lost in certain ways whereby you can basically leave it there and let your character control by the a.i. system.
The difference between the two modes are, semi-auto mode helps you automatically fight with only the normal attacks of the character but you need make use of the special attack (Ultimate) and rising mode yourself. While auto-mode helps you do everything which makes things easy especially entering characters’ rising mode.
Special attacks are basically the Ultimate of your character, which requires the specific card to use your specific character’ special attack. A rising meter can be charged during the fight, after it is fully charged, your character will be able to enter rising mode. Once your character enters rising mode, the character deals more damage, s.p. meter (special attack meter) charges faster and your character movement speed increases.
