Quake Champions – Why It Will Rival Overwatch

Quake Champions marketing is well under way and the closed beta is now available to sign up for. I am excited for this one. I grew up playing Quake 3 Arena and loved every brutal minute of it. This super fast paced FPS is going to be harsh and unforgiving. But, it’s Quake, so maybe we can forgive it a little. The only issue I thought it might have is its family friendly competitor, Overwatch. It’s a game that has gripped millions of hearts and still refuses to let go. However, I now believe that Quake Champions is going to be better than Overwatch, and I’ll tell you why.

You will hear a lot in the widespread media that video games are far too violent. And, in this case, they may be right. But, that doesn’t mean it won’t still be fun. After all, you can hardly call Quake a “realistic” setting. I mean, there is a map that has a giant moving eyeball in it. My point is, Quake Champions looks like it is sticking to what it knows: utter gruesome, blood covered violence. And I’m okay with that. Personally, I think it is going to have more appeal than the cutesy Overwatch scene. But, then again, I have a rather macabre sense of humour and I think blowing someone into a million pieces is quite fun. In a video game, of course.

Okay, so this one I wasn’t so sure about. In Overwatch, as we know, there are three types of character: the tank, the damage dealer and the healer. Quake doesn’t really have any of that. There are still different types of characters but their abilities aren’t going to limit your gameplay. For the setting of quake there isn’t really going to be a need for a healer. I doubt that you can heal a severed head. But, you will have characters that are faster than others or have special magical abilities. This I think is going to play to a lot of people’s fantasies. Usually in these types of multiplayer online games, you have to be strategical. Not with Quake Champions. You just have to get in there and kill everyone.

No more worrying about your team mates screwing it up. You can now play on your own like you’ve always wanted in an online multiplayer game! Okay, sarcasm aside, it is still a cool concept. You will still be able to play team games as well but it won’t be as restricting I don’t think. With a free-for-all deathmatch, you can release some of that “bad team play” anger on random strangers. I imagine it will be quite cathartic, or maybe you’ll just die a lot, who knows. Overwatch, doesn’t offer as much freedom since you have to rely on getting a good team and that is nearly impossible. Unless you have a group of friends who are just as amazing at the game as you are. I’d rather just get in there and see how much blood I can cover the walls in! (I’m not a psychopath, I swear).

Can you do that in Overatch? No. Enough said.

These are just a few of the reasons I think Quake Champions is likely to be better than Overwatch. Obviously, I’m not a psychic and I have no idea what the actual gameplay will be like just yet. Although, I have signed up to the beta, so hopefully we shall know soon enough. Honestly, since playing Quake 3 Arena, I have been waiting for this. I will likely be terrible but I’d rather be terrible and still be able to blow someone to smithereens.

I've always had a passion for games and, since I found my passion for writing, I wanted to write about them. I'll play just about anything if I can get my hands on it. I have an unhealthy obsession with all things Star Wars and my motto is "Never apologise for being a nerd."
