During the Game Awards 2022, the newest trailer for Final Fantasy XVI was released, called ‘Revenge’. This action packed trailer shows a bunch of new footage and gameplay. More importantly though, we finally get a release date for the game.
The ‘Revenge’ revenge finally puts the spotlight back on Clive, after being largely in the background for the past couple of trailers. There are a few hints and reveals about the character — the biggest reveal being that he is the Dominant for Ifrit.
In the trailer while fighting Garuda, we can see Clive transforming into the Eikon, and we can see him transforming again near the end of the trailer. We can see that he’s not the only one, however — there is another person (presumably the hooded man we see throughout the trailer) that is also a Dominant for Ifrit, and is seen fighting Clive.
We also get a hint at how long this journey will take Clive. At one point in the trailer, he mentions that he’s “been waiting for 13 years for this moment”, meaning that will probably be how much time passes throughout the game as he makes his journey of revenge.
After hearing about it for so long, we finally get to see party member fighting alongside Clive! We can see two other people fighting with him, alongside his dog, Torgal. We don’t get to see any of the UI, but it looks like they will be controlled entirely by AI. Finally, it looks like Clive will have access to some of some iconic summon moves — we can see him grow wings and prepare to use what looks to be Megaflare, and we can see another attack that looks like Zantetsuken.
Release Date and Preoder Bonuses
Along with the new trailer, the release date for Final Fantasy XVI was revealed to be June 22, 2023, and a Blog Post was released that detailed the different versions of the game you could get.
Preordering any edition of the game will give you a couple of bonuses:
The Braveheart DLC Weapon
A Cait Sith Charm accessory, which boosts the Gil you receive
There are two different Deluxe Editions for the game you can order, either physical or digital. Each one comes with different bonuses. The physical copy will give you a Steelbook case of the game that features Clive and a cloth map of Valisthea (the world of FFXVI), while the digital version will give you a digital mini artbook and soundtrack.
Finally, there is the loaded Collector’s Edition, which comes with the following:
A Premium Statue featuring Phoenix fighting Ifrit
An eight pin collection featuring the game’s Eikons
a Steelbook case featuring Clive
A cloth map of Valisthea
The Blood Sword DLC weapons (based on the weapon of the same name from Final Fantasy II)
A metallic-sheen collector’s box to hold it all in
There is even more you get from this edition if you preorder it!
A Final Fantasy XVI preorder Steelbook case (presumably featuring different art than the Clive-centered one)
6 in cloth banners featuring the different Realms of Valisthea
Digital mini artbook and soundtrack
The Scholar’s Spectacles accessory that boosts EXP
Preorders for the standard and deluxe edition are available now, while preorders for the Collector’s Edition will be available on December 12 exclusively at the Square Enix Store. With around six months left before release, we may get some more information on Final Fantasy XVI before we get our hands on it, but it’s great that there is finally a planned release date for it!

I'm a huge gamer who especially loves the Final Fantasy series. I will play just about any game, especially if it has anything resembling a Dragoon.
