Asterix and Obelix returning to video games

Anuman Interactive announced on Monday that they have signed a licensing deal with Les Éditions and Albert René to produce video games based on the massively popular Asterix and Obelix series. The first game is scheduled for release in Q4 of 2018.

No further details or platforms were specified, though the press release does mention “current video game consoles”, implying a release across PlayStation 4, Xbox One and potentially the Nintendo Switch.

Anuman Interactive stated that “the team is delighted to be working on a licence as prestigious as Asterix and Obelix. We look forward to having players take on the roles of these iconic, cross-generation heroes”.

The Asterix series began in 1959 and has maintained a consistent popularity in Europe since. It has spawned multiple films, TV shows, toy lines, board games and video games.

The last video game adaption was 2013’s Asterix and Friends, a free-to-play city building game for PC and mobile. The new set of games will be published under Microïds, who recently announced that they are bringing Super Chariot to the Switch. A new team took over the scripts and artwork in 2013, perhaps explaining this new push for the mainstream.
