Incendiary “Burn, Bugs, Burn” Build – Helldivers 2

Sometimes, you just want to burn something. And sometimes (oftentimes) those things are members of the anti-democratic Terminid menace that plague Super Earth’s citizens. By using fire and flame (and maybe a few lasers), this build for Helldivers 2 will burn through your enemies and make molten puddles of the bugs who would dare oppose managed democracy.

Making a quality Incendiary Build in Helldivers 2 is not as simple as it might first seem: while fire can be a very powerful tool against nearly all Terminid enemies, there are 3 major hurdles: destroying hives and other structures, dealing with Bile Titans, and surviving long enough to ensure kills your enemies over time before they kill you.

As such, this build doesn’t just pile on the maximum amount of fire weaponry (though it does contain a lot), instead making a viable, fire-focused build that can burn through Terminids, while still providing a way to deal with those roadblocks. And so, we are confident in saying that this is the best incendiary/fire-based build in Helldivers 2.

Primarily, the Incendiary Build is a very close-range, in-your face build. While you still need to be nimble enough to avoid chargers and sidestep hunters (at least until they burn away), most of your task will involve either moving forward toward an objective slowly enough that you don’t catch yourself on fire, or moving away from a swarm of bugs while laying down a deadly stream of flame.

Incendiary builds are not incredibly mobile, and are often the members closest to the enemy, making them very good “tanks”. This also means, however, that you should be mindful about how you can escape if you get surrounded — this is where Napalm Airstrikes and Incendiary Grenades become incredibly useful. It’s also worth keeping in mind that many enemies won’t die immediately after being lit on fire, and so you will need to heal or shrug off attacks often. Don’t be afraid to call down supplies just to restock on stims.

Oh, and if you catch on fire (which you will sometimes), dive to the ground. Remember: stop, drop, and roll.

In order to help ensure you’re playing Helldivers optimally and can understand our reasoning for these builds (as well as understand the thought process that goes into making on), here is the list of reasons why each item was chosen for the Incendiary Build:

  • Stratagems
    • Flamethrower: For obvious reasons, the Flamethrower is a mainstay of the Incendiary Build. Not only is it necessary, it is also fantastic against bugs, able to even kill Chargers with relative ease.
    • Eagle Napalm Airstrike: Another flame stratagem, the Napalm Airstrike can create a wall that will slowly whittle away at the health of any bugs that seep through, and so can deal tons of damage over time.
    • Orbital Laser: More “laser” than “flame”, the Orbital Laser is an ultra-powerful beam that can help you clear out the Bile Titans and large hives that are normally very difficult (or impossible) to take on with just flame weaponry.
    • “Guard Dog” Rover: The guard dog rover can watch your back against smaller bugs, most especially Hunters, keeping you from getting caught off guard due to your slower movement speed.
    • Incendiary Mines: Not only would replacing the “Guard Dog” Rover or Orbital Laser with Incendiary Mines make an even more fiery build, it can also be a great way to adapt this build to a more defensive play style for Defense missions and those requiring you to stay in one place for a while.
    • Eagle Airstrikes: If the Orbital Laser’s long cooldown time or limited amount of uses dissuades, you, replacing it with the classic Eagle Airstrike can be a great idea, and can always be made use of.
  • Extra Padding (Medium or Heavy): In absence of a fireproof armor, the next best thing is Extra Padding, able to ensure that your armor protects you from the many strikes you’ll receive before the bugs you burn fully die inflict.
  • Breaker Incendiary: The only fire-spewing primary weapon, and on the always-powerful Breaker? No questions asked.
  • Incendiary Grenade: How could an incendiary build be complete without flame grenades? The trick to these is to use them to escape, so you don’t have to slow down to fire your Flamethrower or Breaker at the enemy. They are also just as good at clearing hives as the regular frag.
  • Hellpod Space Optimization: The Breaker can chew through ammo incredibly fast, and those grenades will be gone before you know it if you know when to break away. Starting fully stocked is, generally, the way to go.

When it comes to the other 3 Divers on your team, Incendiary is a hard build to pull off with any more than 1 or 2 members of a squad running it. Because of its high time-to-kill and generally slow movement speed, the best way to compliment an Incendiary build is with base-buster builds (likely using Eagle Airstrikes) or anti-Heavy builds (to deal with Bile Titans and Chargers).

Alternatively, because of the tankiness of this Incendiary Build, having light, highly ranged builds can also be effective, in order for the rest of the team to keep the enemy from flanking and overwhelming the Incendiary user. This can also enable the Incendiary user to move straight to an objective while light, stealthier builds can grab side objectives as they are passed, while still providing ranged support.

When it comes to barbecue, nobody does it better than Helldivers. Between flamethrowers, napalm, lasers, and grenades, no bug will get through their line of defense without becoming charcoal. But there are many other builds available to Helldivers: you can see others like this one on our Builds page here.
