Taash’s Qunari vs. Rivain Choice – Dragon Age: The Veilguard

After everything that happened in Sharksmouth Moutain, following the death of Taash‘s mother and the Dragon King, Taash will need to reflect on their mother’s lessons, and on which of their two cultures they want to embrace. To help them with that, you will be able to tell Taash to either pursue the Rivain side of their heritage that their mother Wanted for Them, or you can tell Taash to look into what their mother was, a Qunari.

The choice you help Taash make will impact what Veilguard Skill and Legendary Armor they obtain, and will alter how Taash views themselves going forward. In this guide, we will go over when you will make this choice, and what happens when you do.

The choice will appear towards the end of the quest Lair of the Dragon King, which is the final full quest in Taash‘s storyline. After defeating the Dragon King and witnessing the death of Taash‘s mother, you will find yourself in a cutscene with a mourning Taash, who is trying to decide what part of themself to focus on: their Rivain upbringing or their Qunari heritage. To help them, you can either ask “What Did She Want for You?” to encourage Taash to lean into their Ravain side, or “What Was She?” to have Taash focus on their Qunari bloodline.

After this quest, Taash will later ask you to accompany them in order to learn what was written on the Qunari tablet that their mother tried so hard to decipher. This will lead to the short quest Words of Fire, where one of two translators will be there to reveal the truth. After Words of Fire, Taash will become a Hero of the Veilguard, and will receive a Veilguard Skill and legendary armor befitting their new cultural approach.

Once you make your choice, Taash will gain a Veilguard Skill and a legendary armor specifically for them. Your choice will determine which Skill and armor they get:

Encouraging Taash to focus on her Rivain upbringing will give Taash Rivain’s Legacy legendary armor, as well as the Rivaini Flair Veilguard Skill.

Rivain’s Legacy is an extremely powerful legendary armor, made even more powerful if you are playing with a Fire damage-focused Rook, as it will greatly magnify the power of your Detonations and increase the amount of Burning you are doing to enemies.

As well as the powerful armor, Taash‘s Rivaini Flair Veilguard Skill is also incredibly powerful, increasing their critical damage (and even more against enemies with high health), as well as giving Taash‘s burning attacks even more damage.

If Taash elects to focus on her Rivain heritage, they will be more at peace with themselves, and the Lords of Fortune will respond even more postively to them.

By having Taash try to learn more about who their mother was and embrace Qunari customs, Taash will get The Qun’s Honor legendary armor, as well as the Veilguard Skill Qunari Focus.

The Qun’s Honor is a very underwhelming legendary armor, as Weakened is one of the weaker status effects. It can still be useful to get multiple detonations at once, and Weakening enemies doesn’t hurt, but it is simply not as impressive as Rivain’s Legacy’s effects.

Taash‘s Qunari Focus Veilguard Skill, like Qun’s Honor, is also underwhelming. Companion damage is rarely enough to be noticeable, even with this big increase, and a 2 second increase in affliction duration is hardly noticeable.

Should you go this path, Taash will occassionally remark on things from a newfound Qunari perspective.

With Taash‘s cultural baggage resolved, they will be ready to use their massive muscles and fire breath to take on whatever enemies you throw them at. But, there are other choices to be made, so feel free to check out our other guides on Companion choices when it is time for them.
