Scattered throughout the Crossroads are five wolf statuettes that you can find as part of the “Regrets of the Dread Wolf” quest in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. These statuettes, once found, eventually lead to uncovering Solas’s memories, ultimately leading you toward finding Mythal in order to get her to help you against the gods. This is actually required in order to achieve the best end of the game.
But, as Morrigan will reveal as you head toward Mythal, convincing the fragment of Mythal that you do find at the end of Regrets of the Dread Wolf is no simple task. While there are several ways to do it — including several secret ways that most players will not see — it still requires you to know how to speak to Mythal in the right way to convince her. Thankfully, this walkthrough should guide you through how to convince Mythal to join you in your fight against the Elven gods in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, allowing you to peacefully earn the best ending of the game.
Note: while we have tried to avoid direct references to spoilers for the ending, because Mythal and her Essence is connected to the end of the game, there are some minor spoilers for the end of the game in this guide.
There are several ways to convince Mythal at the end of Regrets of the Dread Wolf, who you can find after collecting all 5 Wolf Statuettes in the crossroads and then watching all 6 of Solas’s memories in the Lighthouse.
Once you do find her, you will need to either convince her or fight her in order to obtain Mythal’s Essence, which is the item required for the best ending of the game. But if you are able to convince her, you will also receive the powerful “Mythal’s Light” Unique Weapon, in addition to Mythal’s Essence, all without having to fight a dragon.
If you fail to convince Mythal, either by choosing to fight her or by failing to convince her, then you will need to fight her in dragon form, called Mythal’s Retribution. After she is defeated, she will be forced to help you, giving you Mythal’s Essence (and thereby allowing you to get the best ending), but you will not receive the “Mythal’s Light” Unique Weapon.
Normal Way to Convince Mythal – All Correct Choices
The “normal” way to convince Mythal is available as soon as you are able to meet her, which can happen much earlier than any of the secret endings, but requires more precision to get right when you do.
Upon walking up to Mythal, she will engage you in conversation. After the first dialogue check, be sure to select “I want your help,” as selecting any other dialogue option will initiate combat immediately, something you can’t turn back on (without reloading a save).
After this, Mythal will give you the chance to petition her for her aid. In order to convince her without having access to the race-specific secret dialogue option (which requires the completion of an associated companion’s questline; see below), you will be presented with 5 dialogue choices: 4 of these let you make a specific argument to Mythal, and 1 (“Forget it. I’ll fight you.”) will immediately initiate combat.
Once you select any of the 4 argument options, you will be given 3 choices. One is a “good” choice, another is a “neutral” choice, and one is a “bad” choice. Selecting any “bad” choice will immediately turn Mythal hostile, forcing you to fight her.
If you want to convince Mythal, then, you will need to select 3 of the 4 “good” options, giving you leeway to select a single “neutral” option in order to still convince her. Once you’ve selected three of those options (which you can see on the table below), then Mythal will be convinced. She will transform into a unique statuette of herself, Mythal’s Essence, which enables you to obtain the best ending of the game. She will also grant you the Unique Weapon “Mythal’s Light.”
Solas is helping me.
We must stop the blight.
We must stop the gods.
We are worthy.
Good
Respected him.
You stood against it.
They wronged you.
Building a safe place.
Neutral
Forgotten him.
People will die.
Put the blight aside?
Fighting monsters.
Bad
I’m sorry that happened.
The blight is your fault.
We need no gods.
I’m following your example.

If you fail, Mythal will become a dragon named Mythal’s Retribution, one of the hardest dragon bosses in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. If you defeat her in this form, you can still acquire Mythal’s Essence for the best ending of the game, but you will lose out on the “Mythal’s Light” Unique Class Weapon. However, whatever you do, you will still be able to get the “A Pale Reflection” Unique Amulet in a chest after the fight.
Secret Ways to Convince Mythal Instantly – Varies by Race
In addition to the normal way of convincing Mythal to help you, requiring 3 successful checks while trying to convince her, there are several ways to convince Mythal with only a single check. While this does require you to wait to speak to Mythal until you have a specific Companion questline completed (to the point where they become a “Hero of the Veilguard”), it is the fastest and safest method of obtaining Mythal’s Essence and Mythal’s Light without angering her.
There are a total of 4 unique secret dialogues that you can use to convince Mythal instantly, each one locked behind a specific race. This means that which method you can use to convince Mythal instantly will depend on your Rook’s race.
Depending on what race you are, you will need to complete a different Companion‘s questline up until they become a Hero of the Veilguard at the end of their quest. Then, you will need to speak to Mythal, having waited to do so until after the Companion’s quest. After that, you will need to select the correct dialogue choices (from the table below) in order to convince her.
To be more specific: once you speak to Mythal and select the “I want your help,” option, you will then need to choose the correct argument to make depending on your race, and then finally you can select “[More]” at the bottom in order to access the unique dialogue that you unlocked for your Rook’s specific race and Companion.

How to Use Mythal’s Essence for the True Ending
NOTE: Spoilers for the end of Dragon Age: The Veilguard are below. This summary avoids as many plot elements as possible, but by its nature will spoil some part of the ending of the game.
At the end of the game, as part of the last dialogue check in the game, then you can use Mythal’s Essence in order to redeem Solas, giving you the best ending of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. After defeating Elgar’nan, you will end up in a confrontation with Solas. When presented with the choices “Let’s try this your way” or “I want to fight you,” select “[More]” at the bottom and then select “You don’t have to do this.” This will cause the best ending
After selecting this, the final cutscene will play out with you attempting to use Mythal’s Essence to convince Solas to swear off his current course. By achieving this ending, you will be able to keep most of the Veilguard alive, and will successfully talk Solas down, resulting in the best possible ending to Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
