What is Momentum? – Dragon Age: The Veilguard

In Dragon Age: The Veilguard, each of the three classes — Warrior, Mage, and Rogue — has a unique class resource that fuels their Abilities and a number of their other Skills. For Rogues, that resource is Momentum, which can be built by succeeding with deft skill and precision.

But how exactly does Momentum work? What is it used for? And how can you generate or increase your maximum Momentum? This guide will go into each of those questions and more.

Momentum in Dragon Age: The Veilguard is the Rogue‘s unique class resource (as opposed to the Warrior‘s Rage and the Mage‘s Mana). So, if you aren’t playing as a Rogue, you don’t have Momentum. If you are playing Rogue, however, Momentum is one of the most important aspects of your class.

At the start of the game, you will begin with 100 maximum Momentum, and can see how much Momentum you have at any given time during regular gameplay by looking at the bottom of the screen, where you’ll see a purple Momentum Bar showing how much Momentum you have at any given time.

The circular pips along this bar are Momentum Points dragon age the veilguard rogue momentum; for every 50 Momentum you have, another Momentum Point is generated (though it will be lost if you fall below that threshold). These Momentum Points dragon age the veilguard rogue momentum are used on most of your Abilities, except for those that are on timed cooldowns instead. When you use an ability that costs Momentum Points dragon age the veilguard rogue momentum, it will activate the Ability and drain 50 Momentum per point spent from your Momentum Bar.

Most Rogue Abilities cost 1 Momentum Point dragon age the veilguard rogue momentum, making them cheaper than the other classes, and incentivizing Rogues to make greater use of their Abilities.

Momentum is also used for certain Rogue Skills, where you will gain a boost for staying above a certain level of Momentum (such as Overwhelming Tactics), or where you can spend Momentum in ways other than on Abilities (such as Hunter’s Focus).

In order to generate Momentum in order to fill your Momentum Bar, you simply need to hit the enemy. Every time you hit them an enemy with anything aside from your Abilities, Momentum ticks up. However, if you get hit, you will lose momentum. Therefore, the Rogue’s playstyle encourages dodges, parries, and the smart use of Light Attacks or charged Heavy Attacks (Rogue charged heavy attacks hit the enemy multiple times and breaks some blocks).

By investing in certain Skills, such as Swift Rebuke, Rolling Momentum, or Burst of Speed (among others), you can increase the rate at which you generate Momentum. If you find yourself wanting a higher Momentum maximum, allowing you to perform more Abilities with a full Momentum Bar, then investing in Skills that give you more Maximum Momentum, such as Determination will allow this.

Some Companion Skills also impact Momentum, such as Emmrich‘s Windfall or Neve‘s Cold Comfort.

Similarly, many pieces of gear help you gain Momentum faster, increase your Maximum Momentum, or use Momentum in other ways than on Abilities.
