Like in most RPGs, merchants are an important part of your adventure, as they will be the main source of useful items, and occasionally equipment. In Dragon Age: The Veilguard, not only will the Merchants sell you stuff that you will need, but you can also help improve the quality of the items they sell!
In this guide, we will go over types of Merchants, what kind of items they sell, how you can upgrade them, and more!
Types of Merchants
There are three major types of Merchants in the game:
Miscellaneous Merchants – can only buy items, not upgradable
Faction Merchants – main source of sales
The Caretaker – upgrades your gear
You will find Miscellaneous vendors throughout your travels — they will sell a variety of items, but there is not much more to them otherwise. They’re worth checking out, as you will occasionally find items that permanently increase one of your stats. On top of this, they can sell things like Valuable Items, Decor for your Lighthouse, and Mementos. Since they can’t be upgraded, you cannot sell items to a Miscellaneous Merchant.
There is also a Merchant for each Faction and they will be the main source of your purchases for both equipment and items. On top of this, these vendors can be upgraded to sell better items — you will mostly do this by selling them stuff like Valuables (they are, in fact, the only type of a vendor you can sell your items to).
The Caretaker is a special vendor who focuses on upgrading your gear. We will cover him in more detail later.
Now we will go over each merchant type!
Faction Merchants
As stated above, Faction Merchants will be your primary source for purchasing gear and items, and there is one dedicated Merchant like this for each Faction.
They can also sell various gifts that you can give to your Companions. On top of this, these are also the only vendors that you can sell your unwanted items to. Besides getting some gold back, selling items also has another purpose — this is how you increase your reputation with a Faction. Doing so will allow the Merchant to sell other materials and equipment, as well as give you the chance to level them up (up to level 4).
Note that if the vendor sells a piece of equipment you already own, you can buy the duplicate to upgrade the Tier of your current piece, unlocking one of its locked passive effects.
The Caretaker
The Caretaker is a special type of Merchant only found within the Lighthouse. Rather than selling you items, he upgrades the gear that you currently have, making them more effective in combat.
Leveling up your gear here will increase all of its main stats — it will have no effect on the passive effects, however.
If you bring the Caretaker Mementos that you find in the world, it will allow you to level up your equipment further.
Leveling up your gear will also have the effect of increasing the base level of all the gear you find in the world so that you don’t find any lower-level gear.
Once you reach the quest Completing the Veilguard, another way the Caretaker can help you out is by Enchanting your gear and abilities. This will give your abilities extra effects, making them more effective and giving you more customization options.
Every ability and piece of gear can only have one Enchantment and can be changed as many times as you want.
You cannot equip the same Enchantment on multiple abilities or pieces of gear.
Keep an eye out for all of these vendors throughout your journey, as they will be able to greatly help you out!

I'm a huge gamer who especially loves the Final Fantasy series. I will play just about any game, especially if it has anything resembling a Dragoon.
