Lucanis’s Illario Choice – Dragon Age: The Veilguard

At the end of Lucanis‘s quest “A Murder of Crows,” he finds himself faced with a difficult decision. In light of Illario’s betrayal and attempted theft of the title of First Crow, Lucanis will ask Rook what he should do about Illario. Either you can tell him that His Actions Are Unforgivable, and see Illario tossed in prison, or you can remind him that he still cares, encouraging him to Show Mercy.

Note: if you encouraged Lucanis to “Punish Illario” during his previous quest, Inner Demons, then you will not be given a choice, and Lucanis will always decide that Illario’s actions are unforgiveable.

After you help Lucanis decide, he will receive a Veilguard Skill and Legendary Armor right after the quest, and the decision will also change the direction of Lucanis‘s arc and the Antivan Crow’s attitudes. In this guide, we will go over when you will make this choice, and what happens when you do.

The choice will appear towards the end of the quest A Murder of Crows, which is the final quest in Lucanis‘s storyline. After defeating Illario at the end of the quest, you will be taken into a cutscene. During this, you will be given a choice on what Lucaris should do with Illario. If you tell him that “His Actions are Unforgivable,” than Lucanis will agree, and wil lensure that Illario is sent to prison for his treachery. Otherwise, telling Lucanis “You Still Care. Show Mercy” will see Lucanis allow Illario to remain in the Antivan Crows.

Note: if you encouraged Lucanis to “Punish Illario” during his previous quest, Inner Demons, then you will not be given a choice, and Lucanis will always decide that Illario’s actions are unforgiveable.

Regardless of which choice you make, Lucanis will become a Hero of the Veilguard, as well as receive a Veilguard Skill and set of Legendary Armor.

Once you make your choice and finish the quest, Lucanis will gain a Veilguard Skill and a legendary armor specifically for him. Your choice will determine which Skill and armor he gets:

If you insist that Illario’s actions areunforgivablee and convince Lucanis to send him to prison, then Lucanis will receive the Crow’s Tenacity legendary armor and the Demon of Defiance Veilguard Skill.

The Crow’s Tenacity legendary armor can be very effective for Stagger builds. Because of their likelihood to knock enemies down, the improved detonation effect can help you snowball your victories against single opponents into stagger against the entire field.

Further improving on the effect of Crow’s Tenacity, Lucanis‘s Demon of Defiance Veilguard Skill is most notable for its increase in Detonation Damage and Ability Damage (provided enemies are suffering from an affliction, which they will be most of the time by the late-game). This is one of the most powerful Veilgaurd Skills in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

If you tell Lucanis not to forgive his cousin, then Illario will be removed from the game and taken to prison, and Lucanis will be a bit more aggressive in interactions.

If you encourage Lucanis to show mercy to Illario, despite his mistakes, then Lucanis will receive the Crow’s Poise legendary armor and the Demon of Rebellion Veilguard Skill.

The Crow’s Poison legendary armor is very effective for Lucanis, but is most useful for Rook’s that make heavy use of Necrotic damage (aside from Lucanis himself). While the effect of doubling detonations is powerful, it isn’t as useful as the vulnerability the armor can cause.

An understated Veilgaurd Skill, Lucanis‘s Demon of Rebellion skill is nice to have and doesn’t require you to plan around anything; it is essentially just a flat 10% increase to your defenses and a flat 25% improvement to damage against enemies with Barrier (which can often make the difference by allowing you to one-shot them after).

Should you encourage Lucanis to show mercy, then he will be a calmer person going forward, and Illario will remain around the Cantori Diamond and in future Crow quests.

After you’ve helped Lucanis decide whether his traitorous cousin should get a second chance, Lucanis will be ready for whatever comes his way. But, there are other companion choices to be made, so feel free to check out our other guides on Companion choices when it is time for them.
